Benefits

Does anyone know how the benefit packages vary across the industry? Are they all similar? Do a few banks stand out? What type of 401k matching program should I expect?

my post

Why is my topic (exiting analysts) at the very end of the general i-banking discussion forum? I just posted it yesterday and when I checked this morning to see if anyone responded, it was at the very end of the last page... maybe no one is responding cuz no one looks at the very end for new topics.

Exiting Analysts

I understand that many I-banking analysts leave for other opportunities after two years as an analyst. I also understand that in many cases, they do not want to deal with the unbelievable hours and stress. Most of what I hear is that these analysts leave for private equity or hedge funds. However, I have heard many stories about the hours being not much better, if at all, and even more stress. I realize that this all depends on where you work and for which compnay, but is it just as likely (in general) that your pe and hf jobs after you leave i-banking will require hours almost as long and be more stressful than being an analyst? If so, then what do some of these former analysts who do not want long hours anymore do? There have to be more exit opportunities than just pe and hf (and hopefully some with a lighter work schedule).

MBAs

I'm currently working in North America on a transfer from our London office. Over there, I got a direct promote to Associate (M&A) after 2.5 yrs of pain. Life as an Associate is much better - average around 50-60 hours a week...and the occasional weekend appearance.

Anyway, I digress...what I'm really interested in is the importance of the MBA. In London, its really not as pushed as over here - its seen more as a career changer (why pay for 2 years education to get the same job you had to begin with?).

Life in a connected world

nychimp's picture

Article on how our lives have changed because of the internet...just think, without the internet, iBankingOasis wouldn't be possible and you'd be suffering in relative obscurity.

What is the Internet doing to us? Thirteen years after the invention of the web browser, are we any smarter? Are we creating more wealth? Or are we just watching more porn and getting more spam? How big a deal is it that the world is increasingly connected?

Investment Banking Experienced Hire Qualifications

Looking for some insight regarding placement into the IB field with a background in Accounting. I will have my CPA as well as a year under my belt soon at a Big 4 Acct Firm in the Financial Services practice with both tax and audit experience. Have always aspired for a career on Wall Street, but need some guidance as far as my chances with this set of credentials. Business school is definitely something on my radar, however, have not sat for the GMAT.

language in college

Hi. I've heard that for many careers being skilled at multiple languages is a big plus. I'd imagine for i-bankign, with more work in emerging markets, knowling languages would be a plus. However, I've also heard that most finance work is in English as far as a US resident/graduate would be concerned, and other languages doesn't matter. First, how much emphasis should i put on language? As well, I still want to take a language in college, but, do you think it would be beneficial to thoroughly learn one language or gain good abilities in 2 or 3 languages (all excluding English)? Any input would be appreciated.

switching groups

I was wondering if there were any analysts who have any experience in switching groups. In sort of a freak event, I got placed with a group I'm not very interested in and doesn't really fit well with my career goals. I've tried talking to HR and others to see if anything could be done, but it looks like for now I'm stuck with my group. Obviously, I will make the best of it and put in the required effort, but I'd like to learn from others who have been in similar situations and have managed to network themselves into other groups. Any tips or advise would be very much appreciated? I'd be happy to communicate by email if you need more detailed information from me.
