Another Workplace Massacre

nychimp's picture

Another workplace massacre...Who do you think is to blame? Interesting perspective...I could definitely see this happening in an iBank one day.

A disgruntled and bullied Safeway employee is the latest to commit a workplace massacre. The press and coworkers are blaming the attacker -- but the real culprit is a corporate culture gone bad.

Real Estate Development to I Banking/ PE

Anybody have any experience or know anybody who has made this transition. I went to a second tier school and graduated with a 3.8 GPA while interning at the same Real Estate Development firm the whole time. It is a very prestigious firm that is always ranked in the top 10. My boss had 10 years in Banking before making the move to where he is now. I have been thinking about making a move to Banking or PE.

Formula for Success

I am currently a sophomore at a very small private school. It is considered a "prestigious" school in state, but most people out of state have never heard of it. It did get the 19th rank for USnews' Northern Universities-Masters Top Schools. I have a 3.9 GPA, and I am majoring in Business Management with a concentration in Finance. I don't work, but I do volunteer at the hospital every other weekend.

BSchool Stories

Can somebody please post your "story" of how you got into Bschool? Like what was your "wow" factor besides marks. Did you help the blind orphans in china (jk) or maybe you did. etc. I'm just trying to get a feel for what is a "good story" to make you stand out. Thanks

Prospects

Hello everybody.

First off just fishing for some advice or guidance. Im British, have just finished a 4 year undergrad Degree in Business Finance (1st Class). Have also studied for my Investment management certificate and im 23 years old. Im not sure how you calculate GPA as we dont work on the same system.

I was initially thinking that it would be sensible to join a big 4 accountancy firm. Study for either the ACCA or ACA and specialise in Tax. After a 3 to 5 year stint, attend a top 5 B-School, and then move into PE or IB. I don

Helpful Internship?

I have an internship at a large online retail bank that is guaranteed for 4 summers- I have already completed 2. Should I stay here all 4 summers or would it be worthwhile to find an internship at an investment bank my last summer?

Recently made redundant

Forum,

I was working at a US bulge-bracket in equity derivatives, and was recently made redundant in the annual cull.

I have 1 years worth of experience, I DID NOT join the Analyst programme at this bank, rather, I was a direct hire onto the EQD desk.

My academics are not too great, 2.1 degree from Birmingham University (translates to a GPA of around 3.2-3.3) and zero prior work experience/internships.

What is good about I-banking?

Everyone seems to hate their job on this forum. Aside from the money and of course the prestige, is there anything good about banking as an analyst? Also, How does one answer in an interview, "Why do you want to be an Investment Banker"?

Double standard for females?

For those of you who are already bankers, especially in the BB: I know there aren't very many girls in banking. So do associates or MDs expect less of the females that have made it? From my experience, females' performances tend to suffer more than males' performances in times of great sleep deprivation/exhaustion; I am surprised that some places claim to have a 25% females.

GPA Rounding

So we've pretty much all voiced our opinions on drastic GPA rounding in the "I've been fired..." post.

I'm curious to hear what you all think about rounding a 3.445 GPA to a 3.5. If I had a 3.45, then I would have no problem rounding up to 3.5... but should the fact that I'm .005 away from a 3.45 keep me from rounding?

Do you think this is acceptable, or do you think any rounding at all is unacceptable?

How to be prepared for a networking opportunity?

ZiggyMon's picture

I will be going to a convention soon where I will most likely come across quite a few people already in the idustry. Thus, it is probably a good chance for me to network.

How can I be prepared for such a situation in case if I come across any I-Banker?

Just to let you know my background is not in finance. I studied purely quantative subjects.

Any suggestions ?
