The Analyst Blueprint for Saving on Taxes

We all know that as bankers we get hit pretty hard with taxes. Here are a few tips for the new analysts that will help soften the blow:

(a) signing bonus: Try to make sure your bank pays you this in the fall of your senior year right after you get your offer. This way you can claim exemption from all withholding taxes as your are unemployed and your total AGI will be beneath the threshold for tax liability. Even if you did an internship, your total income for the year is probably going to be relatively small (>25K) so make sure you max your withholding allowances and keep your cash.

lehman retail /consumer

how do these 2 groups rate compared to the rest of the Street?

is retail still tops?

Cornell v Yale

On a previous post somebody shit tossed Cornell. This is what I think:
1. Much for "I am the fucking man kids at Cornell than Yale or other Ivys.
2. The smartest Cornell kid is prolly a lot smarter than the smartest Yale kid.
I use Yale b/c i went there.

Diversity

Whats diversity like in IB?

Windows Vista

Wasting Time's picture

Do you guys think that investment banks will start replacing XP with Vista this November/Early 2007?

JPM CHR vs UBS Consumer

Which bank is generally known to have a better Consumer/Retail group on the street? I know that UBS worked on P&G/Gillette deal a few years ago, but haven't heard from them since then in the space. How big is each bank's group? I know JPM is probably a bit larger since they have Healthcare embedded in it as well.

Career in Equity Syndicate

What is your impression of a career in Equity Syndicate (within Capital Markets) at a top US investment bank. How good are the exit options and what kind of job can this position lead too both within this industry and else where.

Lifters in IB

Current Bankers: How many guys in the office would you say are built? There appears to be a lack of jackked IBers. I'm the only serious lifter i've seen at my bank (BB).

Can someone clarify this for me

The layout at IB..as an analyst, do you work in a cubicle? or is it a row of desks with nothing to seperate you from the next guy

Back Office (Technology)

Wasting Time's picture

Can anyone tell me about the technology teams at investment banks? How does one get a job in the back office (do they recruit at schools for back office jobs)? Are all the people in technology CMIS majors?

Anyone from another industry?

I consider myself very fortunate in that I discovered VC almost by accident when I was invited to start consulting for my current employer via a fellow finance convert.

Anyone else come from another industry all together? I know that it is very rare to be able to forego the analyst stint, and I am wondering if anyone either has done it themselves or knows anyone who has simply migrated laterally after working in another facet in industry whether it be tech or accting or what have you....

Which bank for a checking account?

Salam Shpekov's picture

Hello! So I will be moving to New York in a couple of months, so I will need to get a checking account. So far, I have used a big Southeastern bank, which has no presence in NYC, so I will obviously have to switch, considering how cash-oriented the city is. Which bank has the best programs and most available ATM's? BofA, Commerce bank, HSBC? Thanks in advance!

What is Lev Fin exactly?

As someone who is not yet in banking, I find Leveraged Finance to be the one group I can't completely get my head around. Can somebody please explain in-depth?

From a deal standpoint, how do bankers in the Lev Fin group spend their time compared to other groups? Where does the deal flow come from, how are the deals structured, etc.?

Watches

Already have a Tag, wondering what you other guys prefer for watches.

Is this true?

I spoke to my friend yesterday, and he told me that business schools don't like investment bankers because they are too agressive, hostile towards others, and never want to work in groups. He said that NYU for example stopped taking ibankers alltogether.

Any truth to this?

Financial Engineering

I remember being on north campus (Michigan) in the media union wondering what the hell that strange room was for with all the stock tickers on the walls....what I didn't know then was that this cold dark room was used for the financial engineers.

All I know is that it was always empty...

I remember thinking how silly and strange a major that must have been, and continued walking back to join my fellow bleary eyed chemE's as we attempted to simulate a three effect evaporator in excel (read: do shit that in excel that would cause many of my coworkers' heads to explode)....but I digress....

Telecom/Media Group

anyone in this group? what exactly do you do?

J.P. Morgan Chase: Building The Global Bank

BananaMan's picture

Article on a JP Morgan Chase from McKinsey Quarterly.

JPMorgan Chase ranks among the world's leading financial-services businesses, boasting $1.3 trillion in assets, a major U.S. consumer-banking franchise and operations in more than 50 countries. Created from a succession of mergers over recent years, JPMC prides itself on legacy institutions--Bank One, Chase Manhattan, Chemical, First Chicago, J.P. Morgan, Manufacturers Hanover and National Bank of Detroit--that evoke a colorful history of entrepreneurship and banking innovation going back more than 200 years, to the founding of its earliest predecessor in 1799.
