New jobs numbers came out yesterday. Now What?

jobs

The jobs numbers for the month of July came out yesterday and as usual, they can imply several completely different things. At first glance, it looks promising: employment rose by around 160,000+ jobs in July, with growth in manufacturing, professional services, and health and education services. However, the recent report also mentions that unemployment ticked up from 8.2% to 8.3% (but statistically, nothing changed). Household data from the nation-wide surveys also showed a decline in both employment and the overall size of the labour force. Soooo.....now what?

I wanted to take the time to write a post about someone that isn't talked about much on this website. Stephen Covey, a management guru who died on July 16th, was one of the most successful management gurus ever. His book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” was something we had to read in my Strategic Management class and has sold more than 20 million copies; three of his other books have sold at least 1 million copies each. His Covey Leadership Centre (now part of a firm called FranklinCovey) claims to have had three-quarters of Fortune 500 companies as clients.

Yep, you read that correctly. According to the latest issue of The Economist, over the past 2-3 years, the American economy has almost completely reinvented itself and has changed from the centrally consumer-driven economy of 5 years ago to a far more diversified one.

Mitt Romney's Dilemma

romney

Although this is a fairly political post, I thought it was rather interesting that Romney is still having a problem with this, particularly this close to the general election. As new jobs numbers come out that don't particularly help Obama, one would think that Romney has a great opportunity to take over the current news cycle for a few days, including the Sunday talk shows.

However, reports are surfacing that Governor Mitt Romney's STILL having trouble connecting to the core conservative base in his party. A recent article from the New York Times shows that Romney has been trying to reach out to the Republican establishment over the past couple of years...with not much success.

Well, as many of you know, the CFA is today. I imagine a lot of you, myself included, are taking one of the exams today. Instead of the usual thread topics, like whether or not it's worth it or what's the best study method, I would love to hear some stories from people who have taken this exam. Things such as...

Do you know anyone who:

  • studied for three weeks and somehow passed?
  • got >50% on 4 sections and somehow came through?
  • didn't have a calculator but it didn't matter?

Visiting Business Schools in the UK - What I Learned #4 (London Metropolitan University)

A few weeks ago, I spent over a week in London to visit some family. Because I’m looking into studying in the UK for my MSc in Finance in a year or so, I thought this would be a great way to visit some schools there. I picked some of the obvious choices, including London School of Economics and London Business School, as well as a couple of not-as-well-known schools, including London Metropolitan University and Birkbeck, University of London.

I tried to fit in Cass as well as Imperial College, but I didn't have a chance to really meet anyone from admissions, so those posts would’ve been me stating information that you could easily find on their website (or on ANT’s site). I spent a few days to look around some campuses, do some research on the programs these schools offer, meet some people, shake some hands, etc., etc., etc. After all of this, I thought this would be a great thread to read for anyone who is interested in going to the UK for grad school. My main point for this thread, however, is…are these schools really worth it?

London School of Economics (LSE)

When it comes to LSE, everything you heard from friends or read on WSO or ANT’s website (http://www.msfhq.com) is completely correct.

  • 1. London School of Economics
  • 2. London Business School
  • 3. Imperial College London
  • 4. University of London: Cass School of Business
