2013 WSO Compensation Report has Arrived

After over one year in the making, the 2013 WSO Compensation Report is here!

Access to the FULL 108 page 2013 WSO Compensation Report is 100% free. This report contains thousands of data points across investment banking, private equity, hedge funds and management consulting.

The report cuts the data numerous ways including division, city, AUM and company type and can help you know if you are getting paid enough. Or if you are an employer, this report will give you an idea of what range you should be paying your employees.

Here's how you get access to the full 108 page report:

All we ask from you is to take a few minutes to help us continue to build the most comprehensive and accurate database possible. After submitting three total entries (past entries count) to our Company Database (these entries can either be Company Reviews, Interview Insights* and/or Compensation Datapoints), your entries will be reviewed and you will be granted access to the report within 24 hours of submission (assuming we approve your additions).

As always, none of these submissions are tied to your username and the personal information submitted at the bottom of the entries is not public (only used for aggregate reporting purposes). In other words, this information will never be tied to a specific datapoint to ensure anonymity.

OR if you prefer to pay for access, you can gain 1 year access to the report by purchasing a subscription for $999/year.

Thanks,
Patrick

*Interview Insights are an easy way to hit the three submission threshold in order to gain access for less experienced members. Some people have only worked for a few years and/or as interns, but almost all candidates have had multiple interviews at various firms.

If you do not have a total of three interviews, company reviews or compensation datapoints, please do not create fake data. Every submission is reviewed each night in detail and your account & IP address will be blocked from all of Wall Street Oasis if you try to submit fake information.

thanks patrick! how do i make sure i have made enough submissions (i'm fairly certain i have made 3, in the past few years) and, how do we access the full report once we confirm that our past submissions were accuration?

i'm happy to make 3 more but it may duplicate a post/date point i made in the past

checked your account and yes, you already have access...if you go to the WSO Company Database, there is a link right below the title to the report.

Thank you for your contributions! Patrick

I also submitted 3, so looking forward to receiving the pdf.

Thank You

Submitted three interviews! Awesome work!

EXTREMELY surprised by the number of generalists (investment banking) - even for 1st-3rd year analysts. Can anyone shed some light on this? I thought that by and large, by the time you are an analyst you are pretty much into an industry or product group???

Nice work, Patrick! This is going to be an awesome resource! (One small note: "median" is spelled incorrectly on #97 on Table of Contents. I'm sure those with bloodshot banker eyes will pick it up too. lol)

So psyched! Thanks again.

Hi Patrick, I made 3 submissions, however a couple of comments: - I annualized the January Bonus for the July-December period. Hope that's correct. - There's no line for Relocation Bonus, so I added that to the Cash Bonus - It might be useful to be able to submit numbers in GBP for the London people. Because I've seen other people's submissions and it seems that we are not all using the same exchange rates, which might skew the data...

Looking forward to reading the report!!

Edit: Why doesn't my avatar work? I've tried deleting and re-uploading but it still won't show...

  1. Good idea on relo bonus, will add that in
  2. Would like to keep all bonuses in 1 currency, and since ~80% of submissions are in USD, woudl like to keep that
  3. You profile image is visible and working, we just have a glitch in teh system so you can't see it yourself! We will fix this, but rest assured other users can see your profile image.

cakepie:
Wait so you can either submit 3 posts or pay 1000 dollars to view it? Am I missing something?

Nope, that is correct. In case there is a company that wants access to the report but does not want to submit data, we priced it accordingly based on other reports out there (similar ones go for $2,000+) - but we wanted to make it accessible to anyone that has at least a combinde of 3 interview insights, comp data points or company reviews they can share.

Thanks

I am unable to add a company compensation and company review. Whenever I enter in either a company or my university, the submit page changes to "Please Wait" and never changes back. How do I fix this?

Hi Patrick,

Submitted 3 compensation data points, and yet to receive access after approx 36 hours. If there are any probs I'll PM you the exact details; as a set they might look a bit weird out of context so more than happy to talk you through them.

Thanks

should be set now. again, apologies about the delay.

hey guys, we're looking into this...we'll make sure anyone who has given 3 will be given access...apologies on the delay. The way it is supposed to work is 24-25 hours after your 3RD entry into the Company Database you should be automatically given access (unless one of your submissions is not approved...but you'd know this).

Thanks for your patience, Patrick

MacacoMundial:
Apologies for being thick- but is this the page to go to for the report?

http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/2013-wso-compensation-report-full

Maybe my three postings haven't been approved yet, but I don't know where I would "see" that I have access...any help would be greatly appreciated.

yes, that is the page....there will still be a 24hr delay after you add your 3rd entry -- we are still chekcing to make sure that is working now...(I just gave you access)

HFFBALLfan123:
Patrick, i've tried to upload company data for my previous job and an internship but WSO says those places don't exist...

Hey, would try various spelling, but if you can't find a company, ther is a link right under the company field that prompts you to add in your company...that asks for some basic info about it. Once you add in your company you shoudl be able to move forward. Every submission has to be attached to at least 1 company and 1 school.

Thanks, Patrick

Big5Rep:
Patrick - is there anyway to print this report or save as PDF? I can't seem to do either other than viewing it on the PC itself - is it meant to be ONLY to be read on PC? thanks

Hey Big5, no we keep it on WSOs servers in order to protect it from piracy. Once you have access you can reference it as many times as you need though.

Best, Patrick

I just added three recent ones today but wanna look now!

since you asked so nicely, done.

Thanks! I would give you a SB but I don't think you need them.

Have added a couple (interview insight and firm review) over the past year, just submitted another three today as well to be sure. Happy to contribute to the community, very interested in seeing the report.

Thanks for administrating all of this, rare to have such transparency and communication on a site in such fashion.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

Patrick, is there a way to look at or sort via dropdown for a location-specific compensation and/or interview entry without clicking through each one? For example, if I only want to look at Associate interviews for XYZ Group, but ONLY in its Timbuktu office.

If I clicked on the "Interview" tab, I only get: Position Title Overall Experience Difficulty Year of Last Interview and as such I usually need to click through each Associate entry to figure out where the office was.

Apologies if the question has been answered already - took a cursory look around but couldn't locate details.

We'll see if we can add City into that view and mkae the column sortable. good point, thanks

Hi Patrick,

I'm trying to submit a compensation post, but simply can't get past the initial page. All it says is please wait, after i fill in information. Before putting in stuff I can see the button that says 'submit compensation.......'

I recently read forbes article on the wallstreetoasis's compensation report. Why are the average numbers considerably lower than the ones in other compensation reports, such as the pinnaclegroup's and wallstreetcomps.com?

Hi Patrick,

I have submitted my contributions a couple of days ago, but as of now still cannot access the report. Are there still problems being worked out at this point?

Thanks.

Yes, still having soem issues...will make sure my developer pushes access manually first thing on Monday to those that are waiting. then we'll make sure this 24hr trigger is working. thanks

Rey Kong:
Can we talk about the numbers for a min? is it me or do they really look low?

Hey Rey - what particular #s? I agree they look slightly low, but you have to remember not to look just at the main averages...better if you look at the group and city specific numbers to take out some of the regional / smaller banks.

Page 32. New York Associate numbers -- Base Pay looks below current market salaries (excluding discretionary cash bonuses). I think this may be because "IB" does not differentiate between traditional Investment Banking and/or Brokerage functions (rev generating) and other areas.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you.

dblock21:
question regarding the report...do the median/mean bonuses for ib include the entries where cash bonus is $0. Only ask as there are a ton of salaries in the database without bonuses --- could be because they actually didn't receive one, or could be they didn't receive one yet and left the bonus empty (like myself). thanks

bump...

good question - All zeroes were excluded from the mean and median bonus calculations...we realize that some people got a 0 bonus, but we felt that the majority of 0 bonuses were what you described above, so it didnt make sense to include....

We'll make sure that is in the FAQ page next year...thanks.

Should I be assuming that under Equity Research "Analysts" are meant to be entry-level associates or are associates actually the entry level listed there? I'm just a little confused because of the flipped around naming conventions.

Associates are junior to Analysts in ER which is why you see ER "analysts" making more (see 3rd year+ Analysts)...my guess is there are some "1st year analysts" and 2nd yr analysts that are considered entry level here. We may be able to cut this better next year since we have # of years in the industry....probably a better metric to use vs. title in that case

Patrick,

I have posted 3 reviews over the last week (the latest one was more than 48 hrs back). Looks like I still don't have access to the report. I understand that you may be busy but your help is appreciated at the earliest.

According to your account you do. Sorry to all the people that have had to hear me repeat myself ~30x, but the link to the report is at the top of the WSO Company Database. I will try to get a PM triggered when the role is given so that this is less confusing.

KarateBoy:
The HF numbers don't make sense to me – what banker making would take a 30%+ pay cut?

A few comments on this:

  1. The sample size is MUCH smaller for HF (~200 total), so I wouldn't draw too many conclusions from this -- better to go firm by firm in the Company Database for now (IMO)

  2. You should take a close look at the distributions and firm lists on page 47-49...some of these "Hedge Funds" are really just large Asset Managers, so we'll be able to pull more specific data out as we get more #s

We included these sections for completeness (same issues with PE/VC section), but next year we will have a much larger sample size for HFs, PE firms, etc and can draw better distinctions on pay across cities, AUM, etc...

Hi Patrick,

I submitted a compensation review but I still don't have access. Should I email someone in order to receive the Comp Report?

They say money doesn't buy you happiness. That may be true, but money does buy you a Jet Ski. And Jet Skis are awesome

someusername:
The compensation across all levels seems terribly low for IB.

You'd call $105k all in comp for M&A first years low? or $124k for 2nd years low? remember, we are used to hearing about "top-bucket"...but the avg pay of $75k with avg bonus of $30k (across all banks), sounds about right, and for 2nd years avg bonus if $50k sounds about right.

This isn't 2006, and those numbers include regional boutiques (some who pay much lower bonuses). Remember, if you want more detail you just have to dig. It's all there on a company specific level in the WSO Company Database.

Hey Patrick, Thanks for the details comp report. Great job! I guess as a career switcher I was little disappointed to see the low numbers at the Associate level :) Yeah, its not 2006/7, but still I would have expected median overall comp at BB's/elite boutiques for Assoc-1,2,3 to be at least above 200K.

Hey Patrick,

Have submitted 3 reviews a while back, any chance of getting access to the report soon? Thanks in advance!!!

Everyone gets access automatically 24hrs after submitting the 3rd entry, assuming they are approved. So you most likley have access. Check out the link to report at top of WSO Company Database -- I'm trying to get a system in place to PM members once they've been granted access because people keep asking if they can have access when they already do....

This link (http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/2013-wso-compensation-report-full) is giving me a blank page. As far as I can tell, none of my submissions have been denied and the last one was two days ago. I'd appreciate any insight Patrick (could it be an issue with ipad viewing?).

yeah, i think it uses a flash viewer...it has pulled a blank a few times for me in chrome too so might try FF or IE as well. or refresh yoru browser cache.

thanks

After over one year in the making, the 2013 WSO Compensation Report is here!

2013 WSO Compensation Report is here - THIS PART SHOULD BE HIGHLIGHTED

not trying to be a dick, but 2 questions: 1) how do you figure comparable reports sell for $2000? I have always gotten these comprehensive comp reports from headhunters for free.

2) Under the hedge fund category: Booz allen hamilton cambridge associates There are a bunch of big asset managers in this category, maybe they each run a hedge fund or 2 but they really aren't known for hedge funds, whatever i'll ignore them. But how are BAH and CA even close to being hedge funds?

  1. Just an example: http://www.glocap.com/gcSitePublications?cmItem=PC ...but I'd argue we have much more data that is firm specific just by using the company database to search (as shown in my video above)

  2. I am not sure how BAH and CA got into the HF list, but my guess is they were supposed to be in the consulting section and got misplaced....will look into that with our data guy now.

Just an fyi, those lists are only a small sub-set of the firms that are included in the aggregate #s, but in order to make sure we didn't compromise anonymimty for anyone that works at a small shop, we only listed firms where we had 3 or more entries...(but we still included the firms with 1 and 2 entries for aggregate avgs).

For HFs and PE firms, I think you'll find a lot more value going firm by firm in the Company Database since the sample sizes were significantly smaller outside of IB (this will change for next year as our rate of collection has increased 2-3x).

Thanks, Patrick

Hi guys, was just looking at the compensation report, there seems to be an error. VP Compensation for S&T is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY off. 750k median ? really ?

I think it shows 794k AVG and 250k median which would imply 1 or 2 very high datapoints, but not unheard of...if you look at the sample size, it was only 5...so it's possible we're wrong, but not a defnite...we'll double check. (I personally knew a VP who made ~$1m back in 2002).

I'd take all the data points in this compensation report lightly especially since there is no real way to safeguard against people who aren't actually in the industry from participating in submitting numbers. It also doesn't help that one way of gaining access to the report is to submit three pieces of information into the database so high school / college students who have never earned a cent from any sort of work can just input 70k base, 50k bonus into the system. This might also explain some of the extremely depressed / inflated numbers in the report.
