Is The Netflix Model The Future Of Video Games?

A few articles have popped up recently on WSO about the newly-announced PlayStation 4. If you follow video games, you'll know that this bad boy will make or break Sony's struggling video gaming division, which has suffered over the past six years as Microsoft's Xbox 360 beat it in sales, game selection, and online security.

Well, the PS4 announcement was certainly impressive, at least for "my" generation of gamers -- feels weird to say that. People who are now 22-24 and grew up with the last three generations: PS1/N64, PS2/Xbox/Gamecube, and PS3/X360/Wii, are sure to be looking forward to the PS4. But what about the new bloods who have grown up with only this generation alongside iPad and Android tablet games?

Bill Gates Makes Great Points Through Reddit

I don't go on Reddit too often, but I do find some of the "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) threads to be really interesting, especially when someone like Bill Gates is answering the questions.

Everyone's favorite billionaire answered Reddit's questions last Monday, and in true AMA fashion, came across as much more down to earth than we'd expect. Some of his answers are surprising, and being that he's not discussed often on WSO, I figured it'd be good to bring up some good points from someone who is extremely successful outside the world of finance.

TV Hurts My Brain

I won't for a second deny the fact that I loved watching TV when I was in high school. Sports, sitcoms, and news were always on at my house, and my multi-tasking usually involved working on homework and watching TV at the same time. I didn't mind watching the same episode of SportsCenter 94 times in one day, because the background noise was nice -- now watching TV drives me absolutely nuts.

It's bizarre that in a relatively short amount of time -- 6-7 years -- our sources of information have changed so dramatically. TV is outdated, and in many ways watching TV has shifted from a luxury to a huge annoyance.

"We Need To Have A Talk"

No, it's not another "WSO, we need to have a talk" thread -- this one is about kids who are in their first or second year of college. Of course, if you're already reading this (and are, by extension, on WSO), we don't really need to have a talk, but it's time that someone had a talk with everyone else out there who is about to make the biggest, and possibly costliest, mistake of their life.

You will have trouble making money as a liberal arts major. There, I said it. No, no one in the college advising office will tell you this, and yes, they do claim to somehow have your best interest at heart.

Reforming The Legal Profession

Lawyers don't get a whole lot of love here at WallStreetOasis -- and perhaps we finance guys aren't exactly revered over at jdOasis either. Regardless, there are an awful lot of law-related topics here on WSO, with it being a career path that has traditionally offered similar pay, similar prestige, and -- not sure who'd want it exactly, but -- similar hours.

But, as many of you know, the "legal profession" is currently in shambles. A myriad of kids are going to law school because they have, quite literally, nothing else to do after finishing undergrad, and even a T14 (hell, even YLS) education doesn't guarantee a cushy spot for you in Big Law with that $160K compensation package. Those who do get the job seem to have less of a guarantee of not getting laid off than people in banking, and there aren't exactly many exit opportunities from the Big Law lifestyle.

Well, perhaps there is change that we can believe in with respect to the legal profession.

In one of his more famous books -- Outliers: The Story of Success -- Malcolm Gladwell introduces the "10,000-hour-rule". I'm sure you've all heard of this one before, but just to rehash, the rule basically states that the key to being successful in any field is, in many ways, a function of practicing a specific task for roughly 10,000 hours.

This has become a popular mantra in today's society, from beginner-guitarists posting weekly videos of their playing as they hope to transition to virtuoso-level ability, to recording artists like Macklemore and his song Ten Thousand Hours.

Guess 10K hours paid off for him, but for the rest of us...

For-Profit Company Seeks Social Change

When I was in college, there always seemed to be a select group of people who eschewed finance and tech positions to work for non-profits. In fact, any sort of "non-profit" work was seen as a badge of honor -- indeed, the very designation that an organization is a "non-profit" is popular among 20-somethings.

But Purpose, a B-corporation -- the designation for a for-profit company that carries out a social agenda -- brings forth the question of whether the non-profit model is really the most effective tool for eliciting social change.

DOJ Unsure About AB InBev Takeover Of Group Modelo

I'm sure that there are many beer connoisseurs here on WallStreetOasis, and I don't claim to be one of them -- after all, there is a reason that PBR is my avatar. But, being that I'm interested in F&B, I bring to you today a story of two large companies, vying for eternal partnership, and a big bad DOJ who isn't quite sure about the merger.

Anheuser-Busch InBev sought to acquire Group Modelo to the tune of $20.1BN...what happens is certainly TBD.

Lately I've been running into a lot of folks that I haven't seen for 4-5 years -- mostly because I've been spending some quality R&R time in my hometown before getting started in IB this summer. Coming from a small-ish city, the "running into people" thing is inevitable...people from high school, parents, etc.

Another thing that's inevitable is the ubiquitous "what are you up to?" question, to which I generally respond that I'm between jobs but will be starting a finance role in June.

Some people leave it at that, but most dig deeper..."so what exactly will you be doing?"

Is IB Really The Best "Learning Experience"?

Q: So, applicant, why do you want to do investment banking?

A: Well, among other reasons, investment banking is the best learning experience someone with my background can receive right after finishing college. Working 100 hours a week at something for 2 or 3 years is like receiving 5 years of experience in another field.

Oh everyone's favorite answer to the "you're sure to get this question in your IB interview" question of why on earth you want to sign up for this. But is it actually true? Are you getting a better overall learning experience in finance than elsewhere?
