From globalization to digital isolation?

The Brazilian President is clearly not happy! After cancelling her US visit post Snowden's revelations about the NSA's hacking of government communications in Brazil, and calling them crooks at her General Assembly speech last week, she has also gone a step further.

Brazil plans todivorce itself from the U.S.-centric Internet over Washington's widespread online spying

This is taking the form of pushing for Brazilians' data to be stored in servers locally and the building of a new communication system independent from US and Britain - namely, the BRICS cable from Vladivostock, Russia to Shantou, China to Chennai, India to Cape Town, South Africa to Fortaleza, Brazil, which it turns out, is in its final phase of implementation.

What's the next big tax-haven?

Swiss banks are a tax-haven no more! Thanks to the tax deal reached between Switzerland and the United States to punish Swiss banks that helped wealthy Americans hide money from United States tax authorities in offshore accounts.

I found an infographic about emerging tax-havens in the world and I wanted to share it here. Take a look >>>

Data Scientist: "Sexiest" Job of the 21st Century?

According to an article published in the Harvard Business Review last year, Data Scientist is the sexiest job of the 21st century. That's right, the guy that writes computer codes to find new insights in data (putting it simply).

Of course, this is only if you define a "sexy job" as one that is in high demand and where you can demand a sizable paycheck. Turns out, pay for data scientists is upwards of $225,000 even for people straight out of graduate school.

Did programming just become more interesting? See this infographic on the so-called Data Scientists.

Which bus are you on?

Business opportunities are like buses; there's always another one coming ~ Richard Branson.

Agree with it or not, it is interesting to note the businesses pursued by some of the most popular entrepreneurs of today- Richard Branson selling christmas trees and Mark Cuban who began his career selling garbage cans- before they started making their billions.

Ecuador and Oil drilling... reviewing a new policy perspective

What would you say to a neighbor who is suddenly demanding that you or the city pay him to stop littering in the neighborhood, afterall it is to the locality's advantage that he refrain from doing so?

Can we demand remuneration for 'refraining' from activities that are perceived as bad for the environment or society?

Namely, demanding that all the rich countries in the world pay a poor country to refrain from drilling oil from its natural reserves? As Ecuador did. And failed.

Bezos, tech industry and the future of the Newspaper business

Technology went to Washington this week with the purchase of the Washington Post by Jeff Bezos for $250 million.

Why did Jeff Bezos buy the Washington Post? has been a widely pervasive question in social media this week and I thought to bring the discussion to WSO today.

Forex Crisis, QE, Bitcoin and a single global currency...... A history of money

I came across an interesting infographic recently that I wanted to share here. Starting with a history of currency crises over the last two decades and ending with an analysis of a global currency future....

Apple and High-fashion?

There's no one more qualified to integrate technology and fashion than the quintessential designer of the tech industry.

The news of Apple having hired the CEO of Yves Saint Laurent- Paul Deneve, has been all pervasive this week, with rumors and speculations abounding in social media - will he be heading the iWatch project? Is he filling the now-vacant Retail Head role? What is this Special Projects position?

The so called ‘Paid’ Internship

How much would you pay for a 1-week internship with a Hedge fund- An internship position secured through bidding for an opportunity to work with your dream employer? This may sound strange to some, but if you have heard of Charitybuzz, you would not be so surprised.

The Internship' trend may spread afterall, albeit for a wealthy Owen Wilson-Vince Vaughn duo who are able to bid their way into Google.

Would Aereo go the way of Tivo?

Tivo began as a disrupter in the Television industry landscape. It was a game changer and an amazing one at that. Suddenly, you could record complete seasons of TV shows, pause your show and fast forward through ads. A whole world of options opened up that brought Television under the viewer's control.

However, after making a big splash in this arena, it eventually resulted in cable companies incorporating DVR options into their own set top boxes. Today, Tivo is just a great product that never took off!
