Kobe Loses Three Mansions + $75m in Divorce

Monkeys,

This topic has been beaten to death on these forums, but in case you aren't absolutely convinced of the necessity of signing the almighty get-out-of-marital-jail-free card known as the prenuptial agreement, take a life lesson from the living case of Kobe Bryant.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/kobe-bryant-loses-three…

According to Yahoo News, Kobe just lost three (that's right, three) mansions in Newport Beach along with $75 million to his ex-wife Vanessa.

Even rappers paid attention to this shit. Drake name-dropped Kobe’s issue briefly in his verse on Rick Ross’ track, “Stay Schemin,” where he utters, “Kobe ’bout to lose a hundred fifty M’s / Kobe my nigga I hate it had to be him / Bitch you wasn’t with me shooting in the gym." I think that's a priceless quote, because that’s usually the argument when it comes down to women wanting half of their successful husband’s assets. Why does Kobe Bryant’s (or any man's, for that matter) wife deserve half of his money if she wasn’t there while he was practicing/sweating/working hard ... day-in-and-day-out? Drake says it best: “bitch, you wasn't with me shooting in the gym!”

Here's the video for anyone interested:

What do you think? Fair? Not fair? Funny?

Great line....from Canada Dry...I mean Drake. But this goes the same for woman with money too...everyone with money should be signing a prenuptial agreement..

Then again, that wont even save you sometimes. But in this case Kobe I don't feel bad for him this was his highschool sweetheart, so it's hard to say she married him for money... She had to drop out of high school because of Kobe, then Kobe cheated on her and what not...

I think I'd side more with Kobe if he married her then 3 years later she wanted a divorce but that just isn't the case here.

But $75 million and 3 mansions...damn.

These are some great counterpoints. I agree, infidelity absolutely is grounds for a divorce ... but you can also create a post-nup almost as easily as a pre-nup. Once he realized how astronomically successful his career was turning out to be, doesn't it just scream at you that you need to safeguard your assets if you're gonna philander your way through life?

And why .. on .. earth is 3 houses and $75 million the settlement? That is absurd.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

I agree he should have protected his assets but the judge HAS to be a Lebrick fan...how can you award someone 3 houses and $75million? Are we to assume Kobe has 3 more houses and at least another $75 sitting around somewhere?

Nah, Kobe was 3 years into the NBA and averaging 20 PPG when they met and they got married two years later.

I've seen estimates of his net worth ranging from $150 mil. to $380 mil.

holy shit man. That's why you should never marry a gold digger. Kobe is the greatest ball player on the planet and it is a fucking shame that a gold digger would take Kobe's wealth and accomplishment away from him. This is disgusting as fuck.

LeBron James: please watch out.

Why exactly is she a gold digger?

She waited exactly 10 years so she could get that guarantee on half his assets

best argument for polygamy, right here.

So you can lose 100% of your assets when both of them divorce you?

Back on topic: I'm no feminist, but while the man is out earning money/putting up shots in the gym, the wife is usually taking care of the children/household, a job which is amazingly stressful, probably adds as much or more value to the community, and is being rewarded pitifully.

Maybe not in this case, because Vanessa must've hired a bunch of help. Anyway, the guy already cheated on her, so Kobe can't be too pissed off.

you sir obviously don't understand polygamy very well. when you get sick of the wifey, you get a new one and push her to the back of the rotation. no divorce.

and do you really think an NBA wife is changing diapers and schlepping groceries? they have an army of nannies, cooks and butlers, as you say. she got a free ride.

This. She used to be a back dancer for some music videos, and got lucky and hooked up with Kobe. All she did was to fuck Kobe and shit out a couple of kids. You are fooling yourself if you think she actually changed diapers and took care of her kids, etc.

I am not sure why those ballers don't get prenuptial agreement before marriage. Nowadays, it's too risky. Look at Tiger Woods. That man used to have the sweetest smile on his face on the field. Now, he looks fucking pissed, and I think it has a lot to do with the fact that he lost half of his wealth to his gold-digging blonde ex-wife from fucking Sweden.

As a father that's just as involved in raising his son as the mother, I'm gonna go ahead and tell you that you're overestimating how stressful and how bad it is raising a child. I'm so sick of moms acting like what they're doing is so rare and hard, it's pathetic. And the reward for being a good parent is not pitiful if you find it rewarding to see your child grow into a great person.

This really discourages me from getting married. I've been in a several years relationship too. Even if he had a prenup she still would've robbed him.

"Kobe Bryant should have known his soon-to-be ex-wife would take him to the cleaners in their divorce ... because she learned the wallet-raiding playbook from her mother ... so says Vanessa's ex-step dad.

TMZ spoke with Stephen Laine -- an inventory manager for a food company who was married to Vanessa's mother from 1990 to 2003 ... and helped raise Vanessa from a child into adulthood.

Laine tells us, "Her mother taught her well to wait for the ten-year mark [before divorcing]."

He explains, "In California ... it's considered a long term marriage and then she gets paid for life or until she remarries ... just like her mother is doing to me."

It's not his fault, he's a basketball player. You'd expect someone more in tune with these matters to have stepped in early on. Someone should fire his stupid advisor or legal representative. Unless that person just made 20% fee from ex-wife :)

There has to be a sliding scale of divorce payouts. When you hit 500k in assets, then your wife gets 45%, 1mm = 40%, 5mm =30%, 15mm =20%, 25mm = 10%, another over 50mm = 5%. The wife shouldn't have to suffer financially, and if they have kids she should not been seen a lesser of the two parents. But the incentive for a woman not to work after 10-years of marriage and hates her husband, I would guess 90% of women would go divorce over counseling.
