Dollar Shave Club - I'm not sold on it
For those who don't know it yet, go to http://www.dollarshaveclub.com/
Yes, the video is funny. That said, I'm not sold on the business itself.
Maybe I’m just being overly cynical, but how can this business work in the long run? I don’t know about everyone else here, but I sure as shit don’t replace my razor blade once a month, let alone once every 3 months. I don’t know anyone that does, for that matter.
Going off of Amazon.com, you can buy a 12 pack of Gillette Fusion blades for about $34. That averages out to about $2.80 per month for each razor, and that’s assuming that you replace your blade every month (which I really don’t think most people do.)
Now, assuming people go with the mid-level option on DollarShaveClub, they’d get 4 cartridges per month for a comparable razor. So, you get 4 razors a month for $6 a month. That equates to $1.50 per razor. That’s a great deal compared to the above. The issue I see is, why would anyone want to get this package every month. One month’s shipment should really last you four months. You’d end up spending more money for more razors than you would ever need.
Am I missing something here? Not trying to hate, but there are way too many half-baked ideas masquerading as businesses by dressing them up with a decent website and guy humor. Again, I could be way off base with this one, but I want to get other people's views before making a final judgement.
You're misunderstanding their option - you don't get 4 cartridges/month, you get ONE 4-blade cartridge each month.
Still, I don't think it invalidates what you're saying. They're not forcing you to overspend on razors, but they're also not giving you a particularly good deal either. I think the value they're banking on is the convenience, and that if you have a new blade show up at your door each month, you WILL replace your razor that frequently, whereas you wouldn't have otherwise.
Also, people overspend on shit in bulk all the time. Look at places like CostCo or Sams Club... if you pay upfront for it, you are less likely to let things go as a sunk cost and more likely to overspend because you conceive you are getting a good deal. Also, you are underestimating the amount of stupid people out there. Many people won't do the math or won't see it the way we do. They also may feel the convenience is worth the trade off... you could have the same conversation with a poor person trying to figure out why any of us would spend over $100 for a tie, because there is no value proposition in that for them... It will be interesting to see if this idea works or not. I would never subscribe but that's because I typically trim with an electrical razor and then shave infrequently with a disposable.
^^ I don't know about that. http://www.dollarshaveclub.com/select-blade
It says 4 cartridges per month. The cartridges are probably Shicks which are complete pieces of shit.
No, you do get 4 cartridges per month. They're website can be confusing though, they only advertise the number of cartridges on certain pages. http://www.dollarshaveclub.com/select-blade
CaptK makes a good point in that if you have a new blade to use every week, you're more likely to change it (like you're supposed to). Also, the convenience is pretty compelling. I think it's a great idea, but it could also just be a flash in the pan and fade out pretty quickly.
I change my blade weekly...is this not common?
Probably depends on how thick your beard is. But yeah, new blade every week is kind of a must for me.
Interesting. I guess I just don't shave that often / don't have sensitive skin whatsoever.
I just change mine based on feel. BTW, the video on their site is pretty funny.
I don't change my blades nearly as much as I should. Not even close, come to think of it. I've been thinking for a while about switching to safety-razor shaving, old school style. Anybody else do this? The blades are dirt cheap and it's supposed to be the closest shave you can get second only to straight razor.
Yeah, I was kinda surprised to hear you guys go a month or more on one razor. I only shave twice a week on average (I've rocked the 5 o'clock shadow my whole adult life practically) and I'm swapping out blades every four or five shaves (I use a Mach 3 razor). Any more than that and the blade is wrecked and chews up my mug. I've either got steel wool for a beard or y'all are some cheap bastards.
Cheap bastard, here. Would be interested to hear what IP's razor rotation is.
It's definitely convenient, so I think it might work because of that.
I guess some of you monkeys are way better about being clean shaven for work. Making me feel like a fucking rebel.
I head to target once every six months and pick up five packs of razor blades.
Really? I know Manhattan apartments are small, but you really can't find that 2"x3"x3" spot to stick twenty razor blade replacements? This is a dumb idea.
Shave 3-4x/week, replace razor every four or five shaves.
Just get a safety razor and some beard oil. I've used two blades in 8 months, great shave and each blade costs pennies.
Any brand recommendations on the beard oil? You use it in lieu of shaving cream or in addition to?
You can get it at a bunch of mens grooming places. Doesn't really matter. Shave after you shower, but some oil on your face and I used the orange Gillette cream. Great shave and you can use a small pack of blades for well over a year. I bought a really nice razor, but you can find decent ones on EBAY. Razor blades are 5-10 bucks for a pack of 10.
Shaving cream is for weaklings.
I alternate between an electric razor (Phillips and / or Braun) and a normal razor/Mach 3... For the Mach 3, I replace the blade after 3-4 shaves MAX.
Even though I'm nearly always clean shaven, I've rocked a proper beard at times (a couple of months last year during the summer and a week earlier this year)... I look amazing when I grow a beard (girls love it) and can get away with it a my level on the buyside. This isn't something I'd recommend trying if you can't grow a proper beard or you have a face like Bernanke/Chuck Norris.
I only do the 5 O'Clock shadow / stubble look on weekend. During the week I'm clean shaven.
i fucking hate shaving when/if i get my bonus im going to get laser hair removal for my entire body
i dont see how they are banking on this.
I mean, I see how they can make money. Proprietary products, so they own all the margin when they make a sale, recurring revenue as it is a subscription service, and probably minimal overhead. Assuming it catches on and people think it's a worthwhile service, it could be a cash cow that more or less runs itself.
On some level, it's almost shocking that this didn't come around a lot earlier. Though, I'm still not sold that it's a service that people really want / need. But, I hate shaving, so I could be wrong.
I suspect they are going to make most of their money on shipping and handling. Charge an extra $1-5 dollars per package and your margins go through the roof.
The advertisement was hilarious.
I've never tried the cheep Bic razors (the single blade ones they sell by the bag)... I wonder how they would compare to the Mach 3... I'll get a bag and check them out.
Don't do it, dude. They're awful. They just destroy your face.
I actually forgot my Mach 3 when I went to New Orleans two weeks ago and i was pleased to find that they've begun making better disposables. I bought a bag of 3 Bic disposables for $5 and they were comparable (on a disposable basis, obviously) to the Mach 3.
I've only started using the Mach 3 this year, so I'm new to this stuff... I usually use an electric razor phillips/braun (closer shave).
I find it gives a closer shave went wet than a Mach 3 Turbo. With the Philips you're shaving against the grain/growth of your beard and I find myself more able to go over the same spots without destroying my face. It's a bit pricey, but you should be able to find a similar model that's a bit cheeper in the US. If you've never used one before, your face will take about a week or so to get used to it. The wet shave models seem to give a closer shave than the dry ones.
Depending on your shaving style, skin sensitivity, hair type and how thick your beard is you may have a different experience.
Seriously, I use a standard razor because my electric doesn't get me close enough. Also, I change blades every 4-5 shaves too, even less if I am not shaving on a daily basis for whatever reason. I hate shaving and I hate irritated skin.
I just use an outliner lol... and only if its really bad and im between barber visits... lol the benefits of not being excessively hairy!

Basically they deliver razors/cream to you every month for pretty cheap. It seems pretty convenient.
I am a subscriber.
I started with the "4x" blade coming from a Mach 5. I didn't like it as the 4x doesn't have a blade on the back of the head, which I feel is ESSENTIAL.
So I upgraded to "The Executive".
I shave 2x or 3x a week. I probably change blades more frequently now, as I get a new set of 4 every month, so if I don't change the blade weekly, I start to have inventory in my bathroom. I can't say that a fresh blade each week is a lot different than when I had the Mach 5 and probably stretched them longer, but for someone who shaves every day, there's probably a more noticeable difference. Net, I like DSC as it's a quality blade and probably slightly cheaper than buying Mach 5 blades (I tried buying Mach 5s online in bulk but clearly got Chinese knockoffs).
Lastly, the DSC blades are available in bulk. So if you buy the handle, like the blades, and just want to save money, you can cancel your subscription and just buy in bulk. Just google "dollar shave club blades" and you can find the supplier.
I do not use any of the other products they offer.
tried it... didnt like it .. in all fairness I have a very thick beard.. then tried harry's ... works great for me ... better than gillette, DSC, and a couple of electric razors I tried.
Harry's user as well. Get 8 blades delivered every other month. Much better than Fusion. Don't use any of the other products though, just the handle and blades.
I've been using Harry's, not sure I like it. I have thick hair as well and if it was over a certain length the razors didn't work very well. I'm also confused on how to apply the cream. I think I'm doing it wrong.
I've been meaning to, just grabbed the 4x. I can't imagine that I'll need 4 a month, I shave 2x a week usually and go through 3 blades every 2 months or so, I have the facial hair of a 15 year old.
I am a subscriber but will probably stop soon. I have the executive and it gives me razor burns that I never got when I was using the gillete fusion.
I get the 2 bladed version every two months. Use it at the gym. Otherwise I'm a double edged safety razor guy.
I'm not, my father is and he loves it. Also have a friend who used them for a bit, liked it as well. Worth a try I'd say.
I used DSC for awhile, then I invested in a safety razor and the quality of shave is much better. I get 20 blades for 5 dollars. I recommend trying it, you can find them at good prices as well.
Don't buy from Dollar Shave Club. Buy direct from their source, Dorco. That's what I do.
Read this article here - http://lifehacker.com/5903771/forget-dollar-shave-clubbuy-the-same-high…
"In order to get the best deal, you need to make a bulk purchase about the size of a Kleenex box. Consider: The highest-end Dollar Shave Club razor is "The Executive," with six stainless-steel blades, lube strips and a pivoting head, runs $90 over 10 months (razor plus 3 catridges per month). Dorco sells a six-blade model with the same features, the SXA1000. Buying directly from Dorco, a 10-month supply — the razor plus 30 cartridges — costs just $28.66."

Re: razors:
Once you use baby wipes you never go back!
I fail to see how it will reduce wiping to merely 1 wipe. In the words of jimmy kimmel: 'its like trying to get peanut butter out of a shag carpet'.
While the thought of that is completely wretched, I still felt compelled to respond. My guess is it's a two step approach...(1) hit the shag with the regular TP and then (2) finish off with the wet wipe.
Regards
I signed up and use the Dollar Shave Club razors... I give it a B. Cheap, clean razor = better shave. The big problem is that Gillette smartly realized that as you go beyond maybe two or three blades, the head gets too large to maneuver into small spaces (right under nose) so they added the razor on the back side. I continue to debate whether I will switch back.
Wipes - I know plenty of women that do this and I have tried it myself. It really is pretty amazing, but it is not something I would spring for. If I was in a bathroom at the Ritz and they offered normal TP or wipes, go with wipes 100% of the time.
While entertaining, the first video was by far the best.
Flushable wet wipes have been around forever and you can get them much cheaper than $4 for 40
For what it's worth, having used them you generally can get away with 1 wet wipe wipe and just a small TP wipe.
Eddie, what are your thoughts on bitets?
I have one in my back bathroom and they're excellent for holding a laundry hamper.
Buy an old school safety razor. I am still using the box of 10 razor blades nearly 2 years in. Cost me $10 bucks when I bought it.
Baby wipes are what civilized humans use.
As a follow up to my own post, I now see that the "Executive" offered by Dollar Shave Club ($9/mo) does have a rear trimmer blade, so I upgraded. Very lengthy product review to come...
My buddy swears by baby wipes. Maybe I am missing out on something after all...
I swear by baby wipes too. You can get Wet Wipes on Amazon much cheaper than this though. Definitely much better feeling than using just TP.
Awesome.
A safety razor is way cheaper, as TNA pointed out. I bought a pack of 100 razors for $8. You can shave multiple times with the same razor. And I prefer the shave I get with a straight razor as opposed to the Gillette Mach stuff. Better shave for a cheaper price, it's perfect.
Just use your hands. You get a two pack for free.
For shaving, I use a straight blade and it will last a lifetime as long as you know how to sharpen it with a good strop.
Not sure about wiping my ass with some fancy aloe infused paper.

Who else is tired of paying outlandish prices for razors and replacement blades? Being an almost Sasquatch-like guy when it comes to growing facial hair, I begrudgingly pay more to Gillette each month than I do on my internet bill.
But what if there were a company that would ship you razors and blades each month, similar to your Netflix subscription? And what if it were only a fraction of the cost of most store-bought razors?
The Dollar Shave Club hopes to accomplish that by offering razors and replacement blades at a low monthly fee. They currently offer three different choices: a twin blade (ouch) for literally a dollar a month with 5 replacements, a four blade for six dollars with four replacements, and a six blade for nine dollars with three replacements.

Let's face it. Most of us end up using our blade far longer than we should, and replacing blades is expensive. Yet it's a necessity to be clean shaven for our jobs. I myself have signed up for Dollar Shave Club, if anything just to check it out. Plus, I'll admit I'm lazy and forgetful when it comes to buying new blades and the idea of knowing I'll have a number of them delivered to my doorstep each month appeals to me.
But what do you think? Would you be willing to sign up for this service? And do you see Dollar Shave Club lasting long enough to compete with Gillette?
What do you use for shaving? Does anyone use a straight razor, and if so, where did you get yours? I've always been interested in learning how to use one, as I've been told nothing achieves a closer shave.
any1 else got mad furry shaft hair? it drive my bishes crazy but I cant find a blade soft enough 4 my shaft
hahahaha
one of the funniest promo videos I've ever seen. well done.
Did anybody else see this on CNBC like a week ago?
this has been posted a few times but it's great stuff. promo is funny as hell
I haven't shaven further than where my electric buzzer takes me since like junior year. I don't pull off that "13 y.o. haven't even hit puberty yet" look very well. 5 o'clock shadow ftw. only part of my body i clean shave is my ball sach
It will save you money, but you will still get crappy shaves. If you want to save even more money, but get great shaves, Google "wet shaving".
Do you use a straight razor or safety razor? I'd really like to get better shaves but know absolutely nothing about that world of shaving
I haven't tried it, but I did see a review video about it a few days ago.
