Latest Updates to WSO - "In Reply to" animation + more
Hey guys, just wanted to make a post about some recent changes we just pushed live so you know to take advantage of them as well as highlight some changes that we are working on next:
1. "In reply to" tabs (above comments that are in reply to another persons comments) are now animated so that when you click them, a copy of the comment that is being replied to slides open in a window above the replying comment.
2. Blurring comments...we previously made it so logged out users could only see the first 15 comments on any thread before blurring out the rest of the comments. We were having a bit of a slide in search engine traffic (which we thnk is because of this), so in an attempt to reverse that and keep things more open for our lurkers, we have changed the formula and made it a bit more sophisticated. Now, the # of blurred out comments for lurkers will depend on how many comments are in a thread...Any with under 5, no comments blurred, any between 5-10 = 1 comment blurred, 11-20 = 2, 21-30 = 3, etc...This will keep 90+% of our content indexable for Google and hopefully not hurt out user growth that blur has helped accelerate.
3. More spacing in header - minor change but we wanted to give some space. We also fixed a bunch of cross browser issues we were having in FF and IE (not all, but most).
On the way:
1. Improved notification system: Just like you are notified when someone quotes you, we also want you to be notified when someone replies to you, and make it easier to jump to those PMs straight from the Bell icon in upper right...we also want it to be easier to toggle these notifications on/off straight from those PMs
2. A bit more cleanup under the monkey head with the last few icons and stacking it so we have 2 columns, just like we did for the Forums drop down menu
3. A bunch of other stuff on the list that we never get to but hopefully can soon...
Thanks for all of your feedback over the years and especially the last Site Feedback thread. It has given us a lot to do, but as a result I think the site is looking MUCH cleaner and modern.
Keep it coming!
Patrick
Good call on increasing the size of the header. Also about to test out the in reply to function with this post. Keep it up.
needs to be on comments, not on an OP :-)
Hey Patrick, really random thing but this could be cool/useful:
Google Chrome has a feature that allows you to search a website by typing in the URL and pressing the Tab key. It's really useful and works on websites like Seeking Alpha, Youtube, and basically any site that has a search feature. Perhaps this is the same "add as search engine" functionality that browsers like IE and Firefox have. Anyway, it'd be really cool if WSO had something like that.
Not sure how difficult to implement that would be (I imagine that it could be a huge task, depending on how the site works internally), but would be cool to see.
The website looks awesome though; thanks for the hard work and I look forward to one day becoming Human...
you mean the feature in browsers like chrome that allows you to search directly in url bar? not sure i follow what you are looking for? you mean you want to be able to jump straight the search by hitting tab once you are @ WSO Home page?
Thanks
Yes - directly searching the site from the URL bar. This is the same feature that other browsers have as "add as search engine" in their search engine features list.
You know what I mean lol?
well i know chrome can act like a browser, but i am not sure i follow how you can make specific sites "add as a search engine"...can you show me specific steps? You just hit tab after typing in full home page url? I'm in Chrome.
Okay, so forgetting the "add as search" bit, you see how if you type in "seekingalpha.com" into the Chrome URL bar and press Tab, it allows you to search SA directly? The same thing happens if you type youtube.com, linkedin.com, wolframalpha.com, or any site that has this implemented.
If it isn't a difficult thing to implement, I think it would be a great feature to have. That way people can just type wallstreetoasis.com and hit "tab" to directly search content.
Edit: If you mean to ask how to implement the feature, I actually don't know...
I found this: http://dev.chromium.org/tab-to-search
Not that I understand any of it - just trying to help in case you find it a worthwhile thing to implement.
