Perhaps your friend spent more on you than discretionary items...things excluding rent and going out?
I tend to agree, I think in the first two years as an MBB consultant your all-in compensation incl. perks like miles/points is on par with junior analysts. Depends a bit also on the geography but with recent trends in banking towards a higher fixed portion of salary, I think it's pretty indifferent at the beginning. Like OP said, around years 3-4 this starts to change in favor of finance.
