Wolf of Wall Street DiCaprio's Swan Song?

I can't believe I'm actually looking forward to this movie, because the book was utterly execrable, but The Wolf of Wall Street is generating some heavy buzz and some people are already talking about an Oscar. So you might be surprised to learn that Leonardo DiCaprio's portrayal of scumbag penny stock hustler Jordan Belfort will be his last role for a long, long time.

“I am a bit drained,” DiCaprio admitted. “I’m now going to take a long, long break. I’ve done three films in two years and I’m just worn out.” He did extrapolate a bit, citing his environmental work as another weighty factor in the decision: “I would like to improve the world a bit. I will fly around the world doing good for the environment.”

The guy is a movie legend at 38, so no one can blame him for taking an extended vacation. I just wonder if he decided to quit acting altogether would he want The Wolf of Wall Street to be how he's remembered.

I have my own memories of Belfort and the Stratton Oakmont crew. Those guys were animals. My firm absorbed a couple of their offices in late 1994, and their brokers were like...well...you've seen Boiler Room. Multiply that by ten. Thousand. These guys were the biggest chop fiends I'd ever encountered.

So I get that it's going to be a big movie and I get that it's directed by Scorsese and I get that there's a great cast. What I don't get is why DiCaprio would call it quits after that one and not Django Unchained or even Gatsby. Just seems to me that he'll be leaving on a down note.

Of course, I could be completely wrong and he might bring a Jordan Belfort to the screen who is somehow a sympathetic character, somehow the victim and not the perpetrator. But knowing as much of the real story as I do, I kinda doubt it.

The movie is in post production now and is slated for release later this year. Like I said, I'm looking forward to it as I'm sure most of you are. If nothing else, it'll be a fun look at a bygone era. But I'll be sorry to see DiCaprio hang up his spurs.

Hope you guys have a restful holiday.

Does anybody else find it hilarious that he is going to help save the environment by flying around the world (presumably private) ???

Yeah, I think you kinda have to be a movie star for that to make sense.

Indeed.

I'm pretty excited for this movie as well, although I feel that there is a 9/10 chance that it is yet another Wall Street caricature. Either way, I doubt DiCaprio will be gone for more than 12-18 months, he is just too active in Hollywood not to return.

"For all the tribulations in our lives, for all the troubles that remain in the world, the decline of violence is an accomplishment we can savor, and an impetus to cherish the forces of civilization and enlightenment that made it possible."

Who knows. He might use a bicycle. He shouldn't really be in a rush anymore if he's taking a multi-year sabbatical.

The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin', Ringo. I'm tryin' real hard to be the shepherd.

All you have to do is portray anybody on Wall Street as greedy and evil and you will get an Oscar nomination at the least.
Even a kid's movie had reference to it recently (Despicable Me). The evil fat cat banker's company was named:

Evil Bank (formerly known as Lehman Brothers)

Lol, this is cute~

I haven't watched Scorsese+DiCaprio's recent movies, but I expect this one to be another 'Casino' - less violence, tons of emotional twists, and no truely despicable characters - yeah even for a movie depicting wall street.

He will be back. Actors love sabbaticals, especially good actors. I see him acting into his eighties. I also don't think it will be his last film about the street. Someone, is going to reboot Stone's original and he could easily play a raider. Hell, they optioned another reboot of the original Terminator.

As far why Dicaprio is taking a break after this is up in the air. Movies run usually on a six month trailing cycle. I probably felt a bit burnt out at the beginning of shooting and predicted he would be totally burnt by the time post production and promotion wraps up.

PE is the new black.
