Hedge Fund Origination Analyst

An alumni I had met an event reached out to me to let me know that ML was looking to onboard a bunch of analysts for his group. Was subsequently invited to interview by a recruiter.

First rounds consisted of roughly 2 hours of back to back half hour interviews with different associates and VPs. Very behavioral with a few market oriented questions. Overall people were nice and non-imposing. After a week, was invited to a superday interview in NYC (actual trip was scheduled for THREE WEEKS later). They flew me out and put me up in a pretty swanky hotel (Iron Mike Tyson was staying there at the same time, but that's not relevant...) At said supeday I spent about 4 hours meeting with all the people I talked to on the phone plus some analysts and MDs. Again, laid back, conversational, behavioral interviews were the name of the game. Got one easy brainteaser from the MD and that was it. A few weeks after the trip out was asked to read a 90 page investment prospectus. I was quizzed over the phone on said prospectus, which was pretty easy with no real quantitative focus. After nailing all my interviews and getting great feedback, I was subsequently rejected as the team wanted to go with candidates from schools "they were familiar with." c'est la vie.
