Found a listing online but actually submitted my resume/cover letter by e-mailing the Managing Partner and the COO personally. Had a ~30 minute phone interview, followed by an office visit that included a group interview with the other analysts/associates and a modeling case study. The people were great - I think they just found someone local who had equal or better qualifications. No one wore a tie.
Interview Questions
(I currently work for an accounting firm) Why do you want to move to investment banking? I really enjoy the technical/modeling aspect of my work, but the valuations are done primarily for gift tax purposes. That means the final per-share number is put on the front page of the gift tax return, the return is filed, and if all goes well, my work is never looked at again. That is fine while I am still learning, but ultimately, I want to be able to see the results of my work.
At dinner the night before, they told me I would have to do a modeling exercise. They gave me three years of historical financial data and asked me to build an LBO model indicating the purchase price and leverage necessary to achieve 25% IRR. If you do LBO models regularly, it would be pretty straight forward. I don't and therefore fumbled around quite a bit.
