One email to super day - behavioral. Really need to sell the interviewer on why specifically you want to work in real estate.

NA - it was a straight behavioral interview. Nothing was unexpected, but hard to prepare for without having a substantial real estate background to speak to the role.

Granted interview from employee referral. Spoke with a recruiter, who was relatively terse. Otherwise went well, but was not extended an offer.
Interview Questions
Mostly about background. Walk me through your resume, talk about a strength, what did you learn at X company. The recruiter peppered in some more technical questions about the firm itself. How does the managed REIT make money, can you describe their operations, etc. All in all pretty standard and manageable for anyone who has done an ounce of the homework required to land an interview. Highly competitive process in all likelihood and was not extended an offer. The procedure likely varies across all of the different REITs.

Interview
The process seemed quick as they were looking to higher someone. The team was closing a lot of deals and was looking to add an analyst. They're team was pretty lean with 1 VP, 3 associates, and 2 analysts. They wanted to pair a new analyst with the third associate.

The recruiter was one of the standard firms. I had just finished my MS in Finance from a very non target institution and had about 1.5 years of corporate finance (FP&a) experience under my belt. Several recruiters were contacting me because FP&A roles are plentiful.

I would tell them all that I was really looking for the IB opportunity, and it was a long shot because I hadnt came from an analyst program. I told one recruiter what I wanted and she said "Well, I dont have any IB opps, but I do have a PE shop looking for an analyst. It's a long shot, though"

She worked with me to get my resume right, and I was called in for the interview. I went there to meet w/ the VP first, and he called in the other 3 associates. I planned on being there for about 45 minutes but stayed for 3 hours.

I came back to take an excel test the next week. They DID NOT tell me at all was going to be on it, so I pretty much had to wing it. The excel test was basically valuate a company, create a proforma income statement, and tell us what you think.

I had no experience directly, so I just let intuition kick in, and backed up most of my claims with reasoning. It helped that it was really neat and professional looking. from there, I had to explain to the associate my model, and walk him through it.

After that, I met with the 2 MDs. Everyone was really young and the office seem like a tech culture more than a banking culture.

They came back 2 weeks later and offered me the gig.

I met with each person 1 on 1.
Interview Questions
What are your thoughts on real estate? Healthcare?
Why private equity?
Valuate this company. They gave me an excel file w/ a half way completed income statement, and a bunch of directions and told me to see if this is a good buy.

Tell me about yourself / walk me through your resume / what kind of hours are you accustomed to. Pretty standard stuff, here.

There was only 1 interview day - I think it was because they were rushing to find an intern? But I went in early one morning and was initially suppose to interview with only two executives. Once I got there, I had interviews with the two people I was originally suppose to interview with but they later asked if I had time to talk to more members of their team. I ended up meeting with four other people (all senior treasury analysts). All were fit based/behavioral questions - why Fortress, what do you know about Fortress, what kind of programs are you familiar with, walk me through your resume, how do you manage your time, what do you like to do in your free time, etc. The people were all so friendly and it honestly felt more like casual talks than an interview. Make sure to sound enthusiastic, I think they care more about how well you will fit with the team than your technical skills.

Was contacted by HR to conduct an initial interview at their NY HQ.
Interview was interesting given the HR rep wasn't quite familiar with the role.
Interview was fit based and the rep questioned me to figure out how I would fit into the group, which had a very "harsh culture". I was asked about my modeling and quant abilities. After hearing more about the role and the groups "interesting sense of humor" and lack of interaction with the rest of the firm, I declined to continue my candidacy with Fortress.
