Resume dropped in late August and heard back about a Hirevue about two weeks later. Then moved on to a first-round with one of the current associates where it's mostly behavioral and a couple of case study questions.

First, they sent out a hireview with a couple questions that you record. They asked about a few basic questions about how private equity works. Nothing was too complicated. They also wanted to make sure that you had researched the company and knew some of their assets. The next round was a zoom/teams interview with an associate where they got to know you and asked about their investments. They also wanted to ensure that you knew how to drive value in their business types. For example, they wanted to know how you would improve the EBITDA for a restaurant.
Interview Questions
Nothing too crazy. Maybe a few questions about what due dilligence you would need to make a decision on a potential investment.

Interview
Roark basically hires 2-3 summer analysts each year. I was familiar with the firm because I'm from Atlanta. I reached out with a cold email and eventually was given a Hirevue, then never heard back.
Interview Questions
The Hirevue asked questions such as but not limited to:

1. Why Roark?

2. Explain how private equity works as if you were talking to a middle schooler.

3. Walk us through your resume and background.

4. Why do you want to do private equity?

5. How do you calculate free cash flow starting from revenue?

6. Talk about your favorite portfolio company of ours and what attracts you to it.

7. If you were to recommend a way to improve this company to our CEO, what would you say and why?

8. What should we buy next?

Interview
I applied to Roark through my school's (small, southern liberal arts college) online career platform and used a simple resume drop. I was a Junior at the time. After about two weeks I was notified that I would be doing a phone interview for them in about a week. I prepared using the Mergers and Inquisitions guide for IB and some of the PE stuff. The phone interview was with two people at separate times of the day, one in the morning, one in the afternoon both thirty minutes long. The interviewers were a mixed bag, with the morning one being somewhat dull and the afternoon one being much more lively.

In general, the questions they asked were about PE broadly (what is PE, what do you look for in a company you're buying out, etc.), prior financial experience/interest (as a nontraditional major) and about the three accounting statements. I had not taken accounting so I was stuck on those. At the end of the interview, there was a chance to "sell yourself" and just say why you would be good for Roark. One question that came out of left field was when I was asked to "explain something hard," as I did not have anything immediately prepared. Also, not as hard, there was explaining the 08 Crisis in layman's terms.

I heard back from them a few days later over email that I would not be going any further in the interview process.
Interview Questions
"Explain something difficult to me."
"If you had to explain Private Equity to someone who knew nothing about it, how would you do so?"
