Group Interview
Please describe the interview / hiring process.
I have applied through my school's career website and got a call almost immediately (well, within 2 days to be precise). The phone interview was pretty much straightforward, asked me to give a walkthrough of my resume, why UBS, why wealth management etc etc. Then I was given a chance to ask questions. I asked them UBS's strategy to grow its wealth management team and what they were looking for in ideal candidates since I knew that there were a couple of layoffs in the same department that I applied for. After the questions I was called in for a group interview. I was told that there would be four of us in the room interviewing with someone.

The group interview happened right after lunch on a Friday. We were given a bit of background regarding what they look for in a prospective clients. Mostly like a checklist sort of thing for selecting a prospective client. Then we were all given couple of scenarios (one which stands out in my mind is that "suppose you are approached by the owner of a chain of restaurants. His niche market is Asian working class. Would you or would you not consider him as a prospective client. Why? Why not?) and each of us were supposed to discuss our hypothesis. Once all four of us were done, we were asked to discuss among ourselves supporting our own hypothesis and poking holes in the rest. The entire group discussion took 2hrs to finish during which time the lady who was moderating the interview and her intern were taking notes.

A week after this is done, I was called in for a 1-on-1 interview with another associate. I again walked him through my resume, he asked me about my answer to the group discussion question and then we both discussed it. He gave me a peek into his life at UBS and then gave me some pointers as to where my answer was lacking merit and then told me that the HR would call.

The HR never called, I waited two weeks (after doing the drill of sending thank you emails) and then I gave a call back when I was told that they "unfortunately decided not to move on with my candidacy and wished me all the very best with my future endeavours."

This is the only interview where I learnt something and started brushing up those skills. It was quite an experience.
