2016 MBB New Hire: What's next?
I will be starting at an MBB next year. Any resources/advice on what I should start thinking about as I enter my first year in a few months? I have no prior consulting experience and am not sure what I would like to do long-term. If there's a thread on this already, please let me know! Couldn't find any through search.
if you come from a business background, you don't have much to do.
Just improve your excel skills. VBA, Access or SPSS might help as well...
If you come from humanities or engineering, you can read some books about marketing, finance, accounting, valuation. It could be a plus, but you will be fine anyway. :)
Overall, everything will fall into place once you start. So I wouldn't worry too much about it. That being said, if you're looking for things to do, here's some quick thoughts.
From a hard skills standpoint, I agree with Nohelp 2015. Anything you can do to beef up your analytical toolkit (e.g., Excel shortcuts, VBA, SQL, SPSS, maybe Alteryx) could be helpful. That will be one fewer thing you have to learn / worry about once you start. Similarly, getting a solid grounding on business fundamentals will help if you are coming from a non-business background.
Additionally, I'd suggest "prepping" along two other dimensions (time permitting). First, would be what I'll call logistics. Once you start, time will be scarcer, so I'd handle all the little things you can ahead of time. Get global entry if you don't have it (to make navigating airports quicker). Sign up for all the loyalty programs. Get a good credit card (SPG Amex is strong, there are other good options). And, if you're planning to apply to business school in the next 5 years, study for and take the GMAT - your time will be scarcer soon.
The other area would be getting to know the office landscape. As a new hire, everyone is willing to chat / talk with you. And you should take advantage of that. So I'd start reaching out a little bit before you start (maybe a couple of weeks) to rekindle relationships with folks from when you were recruiting, ask what type of work is selling lately, and continue building your network in the office.
