2nd Year Analysts vs. Summer Associates
I know this is probably group specific, but what is your general view on the relationship between the summer associate and the 2nd year analyst?
In my group I am the only analyst left after layoffs and we had a summer analyst come through (who was real cool with taking my orders), but now we have a summer associate (5 week rotations each) who is less inclined to listen to what I have to say (he's left the past two nights at 11 - leaving me to pick up the work that I assigned to him). Normally I would say this isn't a big deal, but with the way our VP staffs things up, it's usually 50/50 up to the associate and myself to send stuff down to the summers. There is "title" that he has on me, but the staffers for the overall group mentioned to us to "treat them both as summer analysts" before they came into our group.
Is this commonplace for a summer associate to boss around a 2nd year analyst, or is this guy just asking to go back onto the job market in August?
Summer Associates are honestly some of the most insufferable creatures in investment banking.
They don't know shit yet they come in and try to establish their dominance amongst summer analysts and analysts alike.
As you might notice, I have not had good experiences with them.
There is NO reason for a Summer Associate to attempt to boss you around. He/she is an INTERN, and you are a full-time.
And you can easily have him scrambling for a job in August if he does not act accordingly.
I'd agree with Devils Advocate (with probably a little less conviction). You are the superior here, in fact, he can probably learn quite a bit from you if he pays attention. I've been fortunate enough to have had great relationships with all of my previous summer associates. One of them is now someone whom I consider to be a close friend and is currently helping me with B-school apps.
Summer and 1st year assocs should treat 2nd / 3rd year analysts with infinite awe and respect... really they should.
The smart / cynical ones realize their place in the world, and will try to wring every bit of modeling / getting crap done quickly knowledge you have. These are the ideal ones. So help them out and they will be able to help you out when you're in a bind.
The others... well think that 1 year of brown nosing at b-school and five years of supply-chain management implementation at some Iowa retailer makes them the next Wasserstein. Nothing you will say to them will take that smug sense of entitlement of their face. So as soon as they're staffed on a deal with no analysts, just watch them drown.
