90% Chance (?) Employers Will Read Your Resume If You do This
StreetID cites Skip Freeman, author of “Headhunter Hiring Secrets: The Rules of the Hiring Game Have Changed . . . Forever !", - saying that you increase your chances -exponentially -of having your resume read if you include a "P.S." message in your Cover Letter such as you'll be calling them later.
Number two of increasing your chances is sending a Certifield Mail Letter rather than the ubiquitous email.
Article:

Anyone has any opinions on this ? Did using the "P.S." helped you get noticed ? Regular mail vs. email ?
I find the first one hard to believe, because nobody actually reads cover letters. Resumes are far more interesting.
I'm not understanding the logic. The author of that article is saying that if you write "P.S." on your cover letter and put that you will call the employer at specific time and date, your resume will get read at a higher percentage. He goes on to say that employers will be able to reference the cover letter for when you call. The authors entire argument hinges on whether or not an employer keeps your resume. If your resume is thrown away, then what? Unless the writer of the piece is saying that writing "P.S." will actually make someone keep your resume--which still doesn't make sense.
I can definitely see this backfiring; you're assuming that they have the time and/or desire to speak with you, which to me, you're in no position to do as an applicant.
All these gimmicks fucking blow. Present a clean and relevant resume and you will get called back. To increase these odds make sure you network and get someone to push or advocate for you on the inside.
All of the comments above are correct. I think what the article is saying, if you already have a relevant resume [and this cannot be stressed enough], then include a note [not necessary a boring Cover Letter] with a P.S. "Will call you" or : "MD or Associate X introduced me to this opportunity".
How did you come up with 90%?
Is that an arbitrary number you pulled up? Did you poll every single recruiting agency, firm, and HR person that searches over resumes? Did you just poll 5? Maybe just 1?
Toss that shit statistic out.
Creative Ways of Making My CV Stand Out (Originally Posted: 01/04/2012)
My college doesnt have many related societies, and I dont feel that I have much time to start up something like an investment society.. Here are some ideas I have for beefing up my IBD resume in 2012:
Are these good ideas? I know that everything helps, but are they time/cost effective?
If any of you guys have some ideas Id be happy to hear them! (I know about the networking/grades side of things).
You want to start an online business but think that you don't even have time to start an investment society? Think about that again. Also: Been there done that. In all the BB interviews I had this year, only one guy asked about my business very briefly.
I did the same thing, but I put under interests and wrote "learning arabic" and "learning to program iPad applications". Contrary to you though, I actually still do both out of interest and not only to beef up my resume. I have to admit though that both came up in interviews and were looked favorable upon.
Hope this helps.
You dont need to only be involved in finance related activities. Banks want more than someone who is only interested in numbers
All of those (aside from the Excel VBA Cert.) sound more time consuming. I run an on campus club which maybe takes me ~10 hours a week, starting one will only take marginally more once up and running. I don't speak Mandarin but I assume learning that up to a level where you could talk financials would be ridiculous... that's not a good idea if your trying to save time. Starting an 'online business' is very vague and I think it would come off poorly in interviews unless you have an actual idea for something of value. However, producing something of value would require as much technical skill (i.e. programming knowledge) as learning a language.
Start a club.
This is so sad. Show some damn sincerity in life, pursue a hobby you're passionate about- not for the sole sake of putting on a damn CV. Then, and only then will you get the attention you so passionately seek.
Which one of the things I said constitutes only 'a few hours of work'?
Get down off your fucking high horse.
None of the things I listed were hobbies, they were projects that I was considering. I could put down my hobbies, but I don't think going out and getting shitfaced is going to land me the role 'I so passionately seek'.
Heres real creativity.
1 Use huge old english letters to start every section. 2 Use pink scented paper. 3 Take nude photos of your GF and say you were a potographer. 4 Write it in windings.
Seriously, just find creative ways to say what you have done. Often they way people write their CVs in plain and boring language that does not really relay what they did to the person reading it.
nice.
beefing up your resume will usually take real work. just trying to do a few hours of work for a solid bullet point probably wont work.
Purple font wingdings on pink, scented paper.
Pink paper will make it stand out
