Abbreviating Numbers in a Resume
I've been working the last few weeks on trimming a two page academic CV down to a one page resume. I've cut most of the fat and have made enough progress to reach a pretty concise one page. However, for some bullets I've had to reduce numbers less than 10 to numerals in order to prevent any one bullet from exceeding two lines. I've also had to make some other compromises and I'll give a few examples below.
I'm assuming if I've had to change "six" to "6" in one bullet, I should also use numerals consistently throughout? Is doing this a big issue or will people understand it's necessary to save space and maintain consistency?
Examples:
1) "40 plus countries on six continents" became "40+ countries on 6 continents"
2) "126,000 square foot commercial build" to "126k ft2 commercial build"
3) "one hundred million dollars" to "$100M"
Some awesome folks have been helping me on my resume as a result of this forum, but I'm trying to work through the small stuff on my own before submitting them another draft for review.
Thanks for any suggestions
I could just be consistent and use numerals on everything. Accomplishes what you need and no one will think twice of it.
Instead of ft2 can you fit sq. ft? It just would be less confusing to some. The other seem fine. Also, you shouldn't worry too much about this as long as the format is consistent through the resume
brooksfit,
Thanks for the comment. To clarify, for 'square feet,' the '2' is superscript on my resume, but it didn't copy and paste correctly on the forum. I had considered 'sq ft' as an option as well
Just use numerals throughout if you have to. Also, one hundred million should be written as $100MM. Although using a single "M" for million is correct as well, using two "M"s will prevent anybody from mistaking it for $100,000.
