EM FX/Rates Trading interview - preparation
I have an interview coming up for "junior trader" in EM FX/rates at a foreign BB. I'm big into macro and speculating/risk taking, so you could call this my dream job.
Job listing suggests "degree in a math, engineering, or quantitative related discipline. Masters degree preferred." On LinkedIn all of these guys have physics, applied maths degrees, etc
I'm a recent grad from a semi-target with a BA in Econ and limited quantitative coursework outside of the degree (some modeling in excel, some Matlab, not much of anything else)
I would appreciate advice from anyone with a quantitative background, especially any rates/fx/derivatives traders on the forum, on how to prepare for the technical side of this interview.
I'm already familiar with the basics of S&T interviewing- "fit" and standard markets knowledge questions are not issue. I already have an offer in sales on a mortgages desk elsewhere. I prefer trading to sales and definitely this product over mortgages, but my biggest fear in this interview is coming off as "more of a salesman".
I have 4-5 days to prepare.
Thanks

About to interview with EM rates desk, currently in DCM - NEED TO CRAM (Originally Posted: 01/25/2011)
Hey guys
I'm currently at JPM/MS/CS/DB - one of the major banks with a big DCM/LevFin group - enjoyed the work but wanted to try something new. As a result, I found out I have an interview with our Emerging Markets trading desk THIS FRIDAY. Meeting with three traders in a row. Very short notice but its an immediate fill.
I need to cram - I would really like this gig, but would like to demonstrate some knowledge base. My understanding is that they focus on LatAm. What are some online resources to look into so I can get fluent in rates/FX speak?
I've searched through WSO all day (still at work) and found the Fabozzi book was often cited as a great resource- unfortunately, I'm usually at work until late so ideally an online resource would be available. I have read many of bondarb and Jimbo's posts and still want to sharpen things up. I DO have a Bloomberg Terminal which is a great resource.
Also, does EM fx/rates/options/swaps use programming at all? Ugh I feel so out of it, but I still have all of tomorrow and Thursday to sharpen up. Things I'm looking at:
Garbade might have some stuff online for you to look at. I tried PMing you but dunno why option is not there..
your bank prob has access to the Gartman letter, read over the last one. Other than I would say try to be very fluent in whats going on the Rates, FX, EM space and have a couple of trade ideas in mind. I would maybe go over a few technicals on wiki but you wont be able to cover much.
You also want to make sure you are aware of any political situations and how they are affecting the markets in EM.
