Accenture Management Consulting Development Program

Hi Guys,

I know there are a ton of posts out there already about Accenture MC, but I wanted to get some opinions on my current position. I go to a private university that is very well-regarded regionally but perhaps not on as much on a national scale. In the past I have interned at a F500 company in a corpfin role (corporate finance is not for me at all) and also had a role as an intern at a small PE firm. GPA ~ 3.8.

I have received an offer for Accenture MCDP and the salary is really great for a first job. 85k + 10k signing bonus. I also really like the idea of MC and the exposure that I should be able to gain in the role. However, I have done some online research and it seems like Accenture takes a TON of hate, especially here on WSO. I have found very little from people who have actually worked in MC at Accenture and was wondering if anyone may have some insights for me on the day-to-day of the role and whether or not the experience was valuable. Also, what sort of exit opps, if any, would I be looking at after 2 years or so in the MCDP. I'm trying to figure out if this is a job I should take or avoid.

I would really appreciate any input you guys might have for me, thanks a lot!

Honestly, you will probably not do any strategy consulting in this role. Accenture Strategy handles all the strategy work and it is very small group. It is also difficult to move from MC to strategy. Pay is good but I think they do it to outprice their competition.

The way Accenture is set-up, if you're in what they call MC, you're going to specialize on a specific industry and the types of roles will be mainly either IT/tech, programme management, business aspects of IT projects (e.g. how should processes be redesigned for a new IT system) or change management.

If this kind of stuff + specializing on an industry is not your cup of tea, don't take it.

The difference vs. MBB is not just status, pay and quality of co-workers, but also fundamentally the types of work you do and the skills you build.

NB: Don't know if MCDP is special in any way though, might be...

I interned at ACC Strategy, the first week all new hires were given a "networking" initial course, on what should we expect from Accenture and the likes, many of my MC folks asked about the difference of sorts of work they'd do and how it differs from that of Strategy, were told there was no large difference and a transfer could be doable. The truth is that the kind of work is nowhere near at all, folks at strategy do some cool stuff not very alike to that of MC, thus making a change very difficult.

Agree with the post above, management consulting at Accenture leans towards:

  • Process Definition and process improvement, ERP integrations,...
  • Transformation which includes business transformations, organizational design, functional change management and supply chain.

It is not a bad job if you like that kind of stuff and I think places well if you have plans for Business School.

Thank you all for the insights, much appreciated.

Does anyone have any knowledge of what sort of exit opps would be available to me if I were to do the MCDP for ~2 years? What would my chances of landing a role in corp dev or corp strategy be?

also, just out a side note. it seems like the must have their management consultants do SOMETHING of value. if it is really all just brainless bitch work then why not pay 65k rather than almost 100k and get less-talented but still capable college grads?
