Accepted an offer in IB but debating on going to another bank's Superday for Commercial Banking

Hey guys, I am a sophomore at a non target school. Recently, I accepted an offer from a MM bank for IB, but I received an invitation to go to a Leadership conference with a super day for Commercial Banking from another MM bank. They state that "if you have already accepted an offer you shouldn't attend", but I am looking for more networking opportunities and interview practice. Is it advisable to go to the event and turn the firm down later or just tell HR that I have already accepted an offer making me ineligible to go. I have 2 days to respond, but I am still debating on this. I do not want to get blacklisted in case they find out. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I agree with what all of you have said, but you guys are forgetting something. I come from a non target school. Unlike target, semi-target schools, most banks don't come down to host networking events for us. We have to go out of our ways to put ourselves in front of these banks. I am not interested in their internship, I just want to network with analysts and have something to put on my resume. It might seem shallow, but to get a BB in my junior year, I have to do everything I possibly can.

And how exactly do you think attending a commercial banking conference for a MM bank is going to help you get on the radar for IB at a BB...?

If you want to expand your network and strengthen your resume, this sounds like a waste of time...not to mention the fact that the people hosting the conference literally said, "don't come if you have an offer."

No one has been able to tell me why it's a bad idea other than it's akin to wasting time. Being a non target I think it's worth my time to go and talk to people at this MM bank. There is literally no downside for me.

It is literally all downside for you. Off the top of my head:

  • Your MM IB could find out that you attended another firm's superday after you accepted their offer -> your MM IB offer is likely to get rescinded

  • The MM Commercial Bank will ask you directly if you have an offer and you will either have to lie as your first impression or tell the truth and look even worse (cheating other students out of a position, wasting interviewers' time deliberately)

  • The MM Commercial Bank could find out that you had an offer another way (e.g. your classmates) and the bank will try to rescind your offer / ruin your career

  • None of the above will happen, but you will feel like a total jackass as the MM CB tries to sell you and get you excited about their bank and you are fucking wasting their goddamn time to get a fucking interview rep, Jesus Christ

If you want to position yourself to potentially work for this Commercial Bank in the future, you should send an email saying, "Thank you very much for the invitation. I think the opportunity at MM CB is very exciting. Unfortunately I have accepted an offer already [optional: at MM IBD], and I don't want to take up a valuable interview slot. Thank you very much and hope we can keep in touch."

If you're just doing reps with an accepted offer, go die in a fire. Do you lack empathy to put yourself in either the interviewer's or other interviewees' shoes?

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

I have seen so many target kids do the same. Accept offer from one BB, and still go to super day for another BB. No one calls them out saying they lack empathy. I have interviewed at a lot of places including a BB, and have first hand seen how some of these target kids come in and interview despite already accepting an offer at another. I have already asked the bank that I accepted an offer from if I can go, and since it's in commercial banking, they said they couldn't care less as long as I don't accept an offer.

I asked for advice politely; it was a lot of people on the forum that started attacking me on things that have nothing to do with the post. E.G: "how did you get an offer in the first place", "you are a fool". I just wanted to see what other people think about this situation. I will do what is in my best interest. I just wanted to gauge where other people stand. Nothing wrong in debating the issue in a civil way instead of just coming out to attacking each other.

I do not need anyone's congratulations, especially not yours. There are so many sophomores who get good offers, so it is nothing to show off. I have gotten here on my own, and I wanted to know other people's perspective on it.

I'm confused why you are looking for more interview practice when... you've already interviewed (well enough to obtain an offer) and accepted an offer. Also, your last sentence,"I do not want to get blacklisted in case they find out" tells me that you already have a hunch that it isn't the right thing to do.

Don't make things more difficult for yourself. Stay committed to your offer and if you figure out after your internship that IB isn't for you, go for a CB internship next summer.

In a similar position as you. But I decided not to come - I don't want to waste their time & resources. And my event doesn't even state "if you have already accepted an offer you shouldn't attend".

I mean, how can you possibly network - looking at people there in their eyes - and lie about how interested you are in the program? While inside you already have an offer and you're only interested in their "good IB program"? This event is for CB isn't it?

If you want to network, email. Call. Attend events that you're supposed to attend. Don't double down your status as a non-target kid with a reputation as inconsiderate etc.

After looking at a lot of responses, I have made my decision. Just to clarify, I am looking out for my own best interests. I do not care if someone else's feelings get hurt or time gets wasted, because I have often been on the receiving end in a lot of these situations. I see every potential experience as a learning opportunity, and what I am observing is that some of you do not share that opinion and that is fine. Thank you for your thoughts, and good luck in your future endeavors.

I go to a non-target school as well. Two years ago I had the same exact mindset as you, I did a lot of interviews for jobs that I wanted and didn't want just to gain experience with interviewing and possibly network. Now that I look back at it, it was a complete waste of my time. Here's what I learned from that mistake:

(1) People who work in commercial banking, ops, etc. do not typically have friends in IB. They might but it is not very likely. Additionally, they are there to recruit for their team not another team. (2) ib interviews and commercial banking interviews are very different. So if your goal is to practice interviewing it won't be very helpful. (3) I know it may not seem like it, this site is a little basis, but there are a lot of people who really do want to work in commercial banking and you are potentially taking a spot that someone who may not have a job an internship offer already.

I understand your perceptive. Like I said I had the same one not too long ago, but looking back at it I really wasted my time.

I see your point. At the end of the day, I do not want this firm to think that I am not interested in them because I turned them down even before the interviews. As a non target, it has been pretty tough to break in, which is why I felt that I should continue pushing, just so the firm knows of me in the future. I will do the right thing and turn it down. Thank you for your input!
