Questions to ask Investment Banking Interviewer
Hey fam, I'm trying to come up with questions to ask interviewers and was wondering if there any other good Q's people have used in the past that sparked up good conversation. Here are mine:
- Traditional tell me about your background/why XYZ firm/why banking for your, etc.
- (If they are VP+) how has the transition from execution to sourcing new business been, challenges w/it, ask for a story about their first deal they brought in, etc.
- Culture? Flat, Top-heavy, etc.
- What are some interesting M&A and industry vertical questions about where do you see market going? Right now, I ask how capital overhang affects their business (money being pulled out from hf and into etf's & pe, resulting in more capital to be deployed w/same supply of deals available). Another question I have is what are the potential implications of this year's election between Trump/Hilary? (one concern I have is that the conversation turns more political than about things like tax implications). Anyways, what are your thoughts/some suggested topics to ask about?
My favourite question is to ask their most interesting deal experience - all interviewers answered enthusiastically and you can certainly find follow-up questions from there.
I avoid politics like the plague ...
ask what they do for fun ... it can help break into a new level of intimacy ... I think this is important because highly sought after opportunities generally are given to the person who is the most likeable (since most of the candidates who make it to in-persons are competent and qualified)

What do you guys think about these company specific interviews?
they sound like you googled them - be careful, anytime I have tried to ask a technical company specific question, I have been asked to try to answer it myself ...
I have no idea how to answer any of this.
I think these are pretty bad questions for the most part, especially if you don't know how to hold a conversation about them. Keep in mind that your interviewers are usually analysts/associates, and these are really irrelevant. Also, some of these questions are pretty predatory in nature.
Chances are, asking these questions won't impress anyone.
