How did you find your roommates?
Monkeys, How did you go about finding roommates for your first job out of college? I'll be going to a city without many graduates from my school and I'm wondering how people found similar people to live with.

Grindr
don't shit where you eat
Craigslist for years. But, check out a lot of places and meet a lot of people.
Craigslist. There are creepers on there, but trust me when I say that living with someone you met on Grindr is a recipe for strife. Go with your gut, and when in doubt, bail. You may also want to see some sort of financial info like a paystub (and be prepared to share your own) and lay down the ground rules ahead of time.
Bumble BFF
Get a lease for a 3-4 bedroom. Find roommates to cover the rent mostly to fully. Live for free. You're welcome
This always ends up being a bad idea
How? You're saying the cons will outweigh the pros in the long run? Yes, it's harder than dropping half your check on a condo. Do you want to build wealth or not? When I started thinking about getting into real estate, nobody said, 'Oh that's fucking awesome that you're going to take control of your life while adding value to society!' They said, 'You're going to have to deal with maintenance calls at midnight and go bankrupt.' Well they're still fucking wage slaves and I run 4 businesses now.
Any Decent Roommate Finding Services? (Houston) (Originally Posted: 09/12/2017)
Boys, I'm relocating to Houston in January and need to find a roommate, I've downloaded a few apps, used Craigslist etc... No luck. Houston is pretty sweet because you can live well on not a lot of money, especially with a roommate, but I am having trouble with that being that I am almost completely new to the city.
If you guys can direct me to what services you guys have used that would be great. OR if you are in Houston and need a roommate starting January, let me know! (Midtown/Downtown/Rice Village/Washington)
Gracias
Hi Bud, Try out www.diggz.co they are fairly new to offer services in Houston but there are some good prospects. It's fairly simple to browse through roommates, free to use, and no need to download anything. On Diggz you can find someone with a room, someone that's looking for a room, or pair up with someone and find a place of your own. Good luck!
Back in ye' old days, when I moved to a new city I used the Roomster site. It's designed for roommate situations in specific, and way more streamlined than Craigslist. In addition, they verify user profiles, so you know the person you are connecting with is a) real, and b) you can see some info about them before you meet. I actually ended up finding a great living situation through there once.
Check it out. Hope it helps!
Definitive FT roommate thread: find a roommate (Originally Posted: 03/29/2010)
Hey guys,
I realize that a lot of us are looking for roommates for FT positions. Since a lot of us aren't from the city we're going to be working in, this process can get a bit difficult. I think it might be beneficial if we had one unified thread for people looking for FT roommates. I apologize if this is a bit of a repeat thread but I'll get the ball rolling.
I'm also looking for roommates also:

just a heads up to you guys. I'll entering ft this yr also, and last year I went looking at appartments with my buddy who was starting ft. I'll give you my brief experience.
Basically, with few exceptions if your looking at nyc so if you have a questions just send me a message and maybe i can help.
gluck everybody -sorry, i wrote this very quickly
[quote=samiam1234]Basically, with few exceptions if your looking at IBD and work in the numbered streets, it would probably be wise to consider Hoboken, too. Downtown Hoboken costs about $100/month more than JC but it's worth every penny at 2 AM when the train from 33rd street stops there for 15 minutes before continuing on to Newport and Grove Street.
I normally advocate being thrifty your first year, but if you can find a walk-up in Hoboken that will cost you less than $1200/month in rent, the extra $100 is worth every penny if it saves you 15 minutes every evening.
City: London Preferred Areas: Square Mile, within 1 mile of St. P's or Liverpool Street Start Date: mid July Lease Start: mid/late June Position: FT Analyst - IBD Total Roommates: 2-4 Your Gender: Male Roommate Gender: Any Budget: upper bound £300/week Contact: PM
Financial district has the lowest rents of any decent neighborhood in Manhattan believe it or not, and the listings are mostly luxury buildings that have your gym, doorman, roof deck, lounge, dry cleaning, etc.
Know friends who found a huge 2 BR convert 3 for 3300 in a nice new development down off of Wall Street.
From what I've seen FiDi certainly is the cheapest. I'm willing to sacrifice ~$200-$300 more to live in midtown so I can walk to work.
City: NYC Preferred Areas: Anywhere along the westside subway, that will give me a straight shot to Tribeca.
Start Date: June 28th Lease Start: June 15th Position: FT analyst - Sales and Trading Total Roommates: 1-2 Your Gender: Male Roommate Gender: No preference Budget: 0-$1500 lower the better obviously Contact: PM
Hey guys. Please just PM me if you are interested. Then we can move on from there. I am just looking for someone that will be comfortable to live with, no hassles. Pretty laid back, but not a frat boy, so nothing too crazy in the apartment. We will probably barely see each other anyway...haha. Anyway let me know!
Is there a consensus on living w/ coworkers? Yay or nay? Assume you somewhat know the person beforehand
I've never seen anyone live with someone who works on the same team. It would be very difficult if you didn't absolutely enjoy your work to have work follow you home every evening. CC: doing homework while sitting on your bed during the day makes it harder to fall asleep at night.

Are there any alternatives? A 1BR or studio will either put me into the $ 2,000 range or have me living in the ghetto.
PM'd
You could probably find people at your school (classes, groups, etc) or, as unattractive as it may be, CraigsList. Or even here on WSO
I lived with Craigslist randoms for a couple years in my early/mid 20s (a bunch of fully-furnished ~4 month sublets) without any real problems. I suggest living with attractive girls, as that will drastically improve your social circe (but it'll making shitting in your apartment awkward at times).
Yes, I'm currently in the same boat. From what I've seen, craigslist is the place to go. Are you in consulting and just want a room?
More housing options should be on the market nearing new years, as people generally don't move during the winter.
Consider living in Jersey City or Hoboken? They are up and coming, close commute, and rent is slightly cheaper...slightly.

Living with attractive girls sounds awesome. Sign me up.
living with girls is a terrible idea. Hoboken doesnt seem bad, but I just assumed everyone in Hoboken just goes to NYC for the nightlife.
Guys- want to live with attractive girls? Lower the rent and I'll find you some great tenants no prob.
I have yet to visit Hoboken, but have friends that live there and commute to the city. They love it.
Advice on finding a roommate (starting early in NYC) (Originally Posted: 09/27/2016)
Hi, I'll start working in New York in March. My monthly budget is ~$2k, and even though I would like to live in a studio, I understand I would have to settle for a private room / master bedroom. My work will be in Midtown and would prefer any place between Midtown - East village. I don't think brokers do not provide contracts just for a room.
What would be the best way for me to find a place? Craigslist? Has anyone used roommates.com? Any other suggestions?
I'm jealous of people in NY because of https://www.welive.com/
Interesting. Thanks!

Is there currently a website dedicated to finding roommates who are currently in ib or will be next year? I think it makes sense for someone searching for a roommate to try and find someone who is in a similar situation and such.
Interested as well. Moving to New York next year and would like to get a couple of roomates. Would like to spend about $1,200 in rent and live in Midtown or close to the green line.
Surely you can get a pretty baller pad for 4,800 a month (4 people?)
Good question... I'd like to live ideally with 2 more people and pay $1,200 each. Is this reasonable? How good (or bad) would be a $3,600 3-bedroom apartment in Manhattan?
On the other hand, if I were to live with 3 more people, rent will be in total $4,800 for a 4-bedroom. Do you think we can get a decent 4-b apartment for this amount of money?
Finally, if I had to pay around $1,500 and share my apartment, I would frankly rather rent my own studio. That's why $1200-1300 (total rent $4000 max for 3-people, $5000 max for 4-people) is my limit for a shared apartment.
Any comments on this?
That is certainly doable. Just make sure you check to make sure that the maintanence fees aren't too high per month. Check this site out:
http://www.anchornyc.com/index.htm
Same boat here. I would like to live with 2-3 roomates preferably in IB in Midtown and spend around $1,200.
i just made this... ibroomies.exofire.net. what do you think?
Definitely $1,200/person should be the maximum, at least from my perspective, that a person should pay to share an apartment. You can find a studio in Manhattan for $1,500 and, if you're lucky, even less. Thus, if you're going to pay more than $1,200, it makes more sense to just live by yourself.
After working long hours in the office, you're going to want to come home to a nice pad. Sack up the money because it's worth it. Me and 3 buddies pay 1,500 and we have a 2 story apartment with 4 bedrooms, 2 bath, kitchen, living room, and a 20 by 10 balcony on the roof.
Tightmonkey, where do u live ?
I checked the website--http://www.anchornyc.com/index.htm
They have really sweet deals--at least that's what they seem to be. Very nice 3-b apartments for $3000-4000 (=about $1200/roomate), and 4-b for $4000-5000 (also about $1200/roomate). Definitely nicer apartments than what you can get if you live on your own.
I am starting in NY next year and am looking for a place around Midtown as well, if anyone is interested give me a shout and we can chat. I haven't found a place yet but was looking for potential roommates.
You sure you want bankers for roommates?
Wouldn't banker roommates be good? That way no one has time to trash the apartment. If you have a roomie working 9-5 then they have more time to party and tear up the living room/kitchen.
Exactly.
NY is tits
Anyone interested in getting a place in the Financial District/Tribeca area?
PMed a few of you that sounded interested. If you guys are still looking for stuff, let me know. We can match people by preferences and personalities etc if there's a bunch of us.
cdnbanker i am pretty interested in FIDI but i'm not looking for housing yet.
Anyone interested in long term housing (not just for the summer) starting June/July 2010, PM me your email address.
I will gather everyone's emails so you guys can match up where you want to live, prices, etc.
urbanhostess has a connection website - some firms use it
1200 is LOW for NYC. before the crisis - it was impossible to get a place for under 1,500 each shared and converted (2 in a 1 bedroom, etc). You can do that in the upper east side, and some other lower rent areas, it is very difficult to find a one bedroom for under 2400 with decent space.
my two bedroom costs more than 3,600 - good luck getting a 3 under 3,600.
also - if you're working banking hours - get a doorman. they can hold your drycleaning and packages for you until you get back home.
if you're sharing an apartment, utilties go down as well per person.
in addition - in NYC, people do not refer to the subway line by colors - by numbers or street route. 4,5,6 (more common) or the Lexington avenue line (less common) vs. the "green line".
Is anyone still looking for roomates in NYC who would be interested to move in by July 1st?

good idea, except it would require a much large member base.

I am a 2007 analyst and would be interested in hearing back from others looking to share an apartment in NYC starting June 2006.
I am also a 2007 analyst and am trying to figure out my living situation in NYC. I think my start date is around August 1, 2007.
Starting a roommate finding topic/group is a good idea.
Why not reach out to some of the new analysts at your bank?
that means you would have to talk to people
Hank, the banks do not hand out that information. At least I know that my bank won't give it out.
They won't give you that info.
whats a reasonable amount to spend in NY housing. it is awful to note that most of the time you wont be in the house, so y pay $2K
If you work 9 to 2, would you rather leave home at 8:45 and come from work at 2:15? OR would you rather leave home at 7:45 to catch a train, and be home at 3:00(or later since at night train service is much more rare).
And yes I know you get the black car at night, but it'll still take a good amount of time to drive you home
Hi I am a 2007 analyst. I am also looking for a roommate. I would love to talk to anybody in the same boat. My training starts next summer as well.
personally I would pick a roommate that isn't in IB.
Think about it, if you pick a roommate in IB, your work life and your home life will be the same. Same boring people, and same boring discussions about IB.
But if you pick one thats not in IB, you'll get the information on whats happening in the world outside of IB, and the person might actually throw parties/invite women to the house.
But thats just my 2 cents.
Disclaimer: The post above has been made by someone who is not currently employed in IBD, and has not had an interview yet...
Good point.
what are the chances of finding a 1-bdr for $1500 in midtown or murray ?
If you live with a roomate who is not IB he/she wont really understand where you're coming from. Eg when you dont have time to wash dishes/get toilet paper.
Also might be really loud or annoying when all you want is a few hours of sleep. (ie after pulling a few all nighters, even if its thursday or fri night)
How to find a roommate (Originally Posted: 05/16/2007)
Hi, I know this is a bit forward for this forum, but does anyone know where or how I can find a roommate for the summer? I'll be interning from June-August, and my firm does not set us up with other interns as roommates. As I said, this forum isn't really the best place to do this, but right now my best option is a random person from craigslist, and so far, I'm having no luck securing housing through that venue. I'm looking to spend about $1200 max per month, and I think it'd be easier to keep the rent expense at a minimum if I had a roommate. Anyone interested or have any suggestions? Thanks, I'd appreciate anything you guys have to say.
Try Educational Housing Services. They might still have some rooms left.
Thanks, any other replies?
anybody from your school interning - might want to see where he/she got apartments
i think NYU has some good deals for summer interns. i think they have a bunch of dorms open downtown that have AC which is always decent
As far as I know, it's too late to get dorms from NYU unless you're planning on taking a class there. That process started in February and their spots for people who weren't taking classes filled up pretty quickly.
Yeah, NYU is out. The timeline didn't work there either. My peers at other banks are using NYU. This is so frustrating.
Stay at a hostel as a final bet, don't you have at least 1 friend or family member in NYC though.

Does your bank not have a program that involves them setting you up with housing summer. A lot of banks take blocks of rooms at NYU or have deals with other places. Talk to HR at your firm.
If I find a place by then, you can crash on my floor for $700/month.
Only conditions are that you have to do my laundry, wash the dishes and cook food for me. Oh yea and keep the house clean.
Seanc, I can do that for 700/month :D MS doesn't help with housing and they don't release other interns' name, so HR is not helpful at all. Even if NYU's timeline worked, they're full. Still looking for a roommate...
Thanks Rickets, but de Hirsch is booked.
You sure about that? MS has a block of rooms reserved at the Water St NYU apartments this year.
Ok, they have dorms reserved for this summer? Even though internships go longer than the dorms are available? Thanks, killermike, hope they have something still.
Yeah, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there
I'll probably just end up crashing at a friend's place
I think that the places reserved on water st. are usually for the ms prime brokerage interns and interns in other divisions housed downtown. I believe that ms usually has some housing reserved in midtown on the west side for interns working in times square.
Hard to find roomates? (Originally Posted: 06/20/2007)
Me and a friend found a really nice 4bedroom apt for a decent price in Manhattan. We can sign with just two of us. Will it be hard to find 2 more people to join us for a one year lease? ? Let me know what you guys think!
as long as you have 40x monthly rent in your bank account/ will be making that or if you have a guarantor that will vouche for 80x monthly you will be fine.
yeah we're fine with the lease. My question is do you think it will be hard to find another two people to room with us? Anyone had success on Craigslist or anything?
I'd be interested depending on the location? Thanks.
it probably won't be a problem as long as the rent is reasonable.
madgames I pmed you if you're interested...
If you post on craigslist under the rooms/shared section, you should get a ton of replies. I know because I have been looking for a room, and every person I met with told me the response from craigslist was overwhelming. Sent you a pm.
are you talking east side or west side?
west side...holla

How do first year analysts usually find roommates in NYC?
I do not live anywhere near NYC now and don't have many contacts there so I am a bit in the dark on this one. My firm has a relatively small head count and I dont expect them to be able to help here.
It is probably best to live with people who have a similar lifestyle, meaning other analysts. I dont think it will be very effective to search Craigslist for other analysts to share an apartment with, am I wrong? Maybe I haven't had any luck because its a bit early.
Any input would be appreciated.
craigslist is an option. Lots of people on that site, but make sure you spend some time with your future roommates before deciding to move in.
urbanhostess has a section for working professionals to find rooommates, but it usually is an employer paid for service.

Anybody got tips? Sounds like a lot of pain to find a decent roommate in NYC. Im not looking forward to sharing an apartment with an ex-con either, so how did you find your good roommates for the first few years?
Are you in banking? Most find their roommates within their own training class.
craigslist. lol. scan people who post their own looking for housing/room mates so u can scan them yourself
if I had to I'd post on WSO. I'd trust a WSO member over someone on craigslist....and hten at least you have some stuff in common/they are probably going to work for a BB too.
sorry for second post
i meant if you can't find one in your school...if you go to a target there will be tons of kids going to NYC to do banking etc

Starting an analyst program Dec 1st in New York. Looking to rent a room or find some room mates to share a lease. Rather live in a decent apartment with other like-minded people than in a shit-hole alone. Any ideas other than craigslist?
If anyone here is looking, message me.

Why hate on craigslist? Your odds of being molested / raped are only like 5%.
