After all the hardwork, it paid off

Non-target story where I landed a good offer. Moral though is Non targets if you’re reading this: This process is much harder than most believe. Do not underestimate the amount of luck involved which means you need to have the part you control 100% down. Stories, technical, fit questions, brainteasers all of it. I came very close to not succeeding. You might have only 1 shot and you need to convert it.

Great stuff, congrats!

Cold Email Count I created a new email account for the recruiting season specifically. The total tally of emails sent out was 412. Out of 412 about 151 responded which gives a response rate of about 36% which is pretty good but it gets worse. Out of the 151, about 45 responded a second time and didn’t blow me off. Of those 45 people, I had calls with 30 and met about 15 of them in person when I financed a trip up to NYC (which only happened because I had a friend to stay with and Delta dollars expiring so the trip was essentially free for me). If you’re paying more than $300 it’s honestly not worth it, you can get the work done from the phone.

Awesome outcome, glad things worked out for you.

On a side note, its very interesting to see your cold email stats. I was taking a similar approach circa-2008/2009. My cold e-mail count was closer to 800. Responses: less than 15. Of those ~15, responses that were "thanks for reaching out but we're in a hiring freeze": 14. Of the remaining 1 that called me in for an interview: 1. And that ended up being my first banking gig... so just goes to show all you need is one bite.

Anyway... glad I could help and keep up the drive and energy and this is just the beginning.

Thanks for sharing your story and congrats!

Consumption smoothing is retarded. If you stay in this game for a handful of years, money will be the least of your worries. Live it up, because this is the one time in your life where you might actually have time to spare.

@"zeroblued" Consensus seems like you had some pretty great response rates during your cold emailing. Could you provide me and the community with the typical email you would send out or if it was individualized to each company how you would go about deciding the content to include.

Thanks

and congrats!

Congrats! This is almost exactly my story except I went into S&T.

Because when you're in a room full of smart people, smart suddenly doesn't matter—interesting is what matters.

Reading this post made me actually miss the grind I was in trying to get an IB position... I dropped out of the banking race after securing an industry spot for a equally satisfying gig on the West Coast, but I have to admit that I still consider the life I would be living otherwise. Watching The Wolf of Wall Street didn't help, either...

Congratulations and good luck, but mostly thanks for sharing your story. Even though I went another route, stories like yours help all the non-targets working their asses off get a taste of the fruit, and motivate them to keep on truckin'.

@"zeroblued" You're the man, thanks a lot. I'll let you know results. Best of luck in the internship, I'm from New York if you ever want to meet up for a beer to celebrate DM me.
