All Is Not Well In Argentina
According to Bloomberg and Huffpost, an arrest warrant has been issued for Argentina's Prez, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, for her alleged role in covering up Iran's involvement in a 1994 bombing that killed 85 Jewish people at an Argentinian community center. On January 18th, Alberto Nisman, who was at the time the lead prosecutor attempting to build a case to prosecute Fernandez, was found dead of a "suicide" (yeah right) the day before he was set to bring evidence to request charges be issued against the prez and members of her administration. He had informed many close to him that he might end up dead before everything was finished with his probe. This case is quite insane, and there are some amazing news stories that have been floating around her over the past year. She's been accusing the US and Iran of attempting to remove her or outright assassinate her, and the US has ruled that Argentina is required to pay US hedge funds that loaned Argentina money over a decade ago. Argentina's central bank president "resigned" after this, and Fernandez seems to shoot from the hip and cover a lot of things up.
Outside looking in, this woman is crazy, and is willing to possibly have people murdered, or cover up murders, to stay in power. Prosecutors are pushing charges, but the federal judge reviewing them has to determine whether it goes to trial. He might be afraid of accidentally committing "suicide" as well. I don't think the US is going to try and have a heavy hand in administration changes down there, but if she is removed from power due to this scandal, what do you guys think global markets will do? Any significant impact? Surely the ratings agencies will be fearful of whoever comes to power next and their ability to borrow and repay. I don't know enough about the political parties there to give an opinion, but the citizens sure did a bang up job by electing her. Below are some interesting articles about all of these events.
