Background:
- Started out in a Big 4 doing advisory work for 2-3 yrs (not due diligence, but mostly how to account for certain transactions/structures, reviewing offering documents, etc.)
- Joined a valuation firm (approx. 20 staff, 3-4 senior staff) around a year ago. The work is mostly for shareholder buyouts, tax purposes, etc. and not for audit support.
Current:
Since joining the new firm, I'm noticing the head partner has some qualities that's making me think twice about the place - full out cussing staff out over small things (formatting, font size, etc.), pretty much being mocked over your work (being called a retard isn't too far fetched, although this hasn't happened to me). I haven't gotten it too bad, and I'm probably somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of getting spanked. Numerous times I've walked into the office in the morning to hear someone getting their asses handed to them at 9am.
All the usual stuff like general disregard for workload, etc. is kind of a given, so I am a bit whatever about that.
We're responsible for all of our own files, and the firm is relatively flat - we all manage our own files, and he reviews each one. The more senior guys steer clear of him, and they do their own thing - almost like running their own practice, but in the same office. It's also not an option to run away from the head partner and work for the others (I've tried).
Decision:
- stay or go?
- I'm ok with the work, and others are sticking around because they think it'll give them better exit opps (supposedly, when times were better, senior ppl were leaving for small pe funds). Plus, the hours are decent (60-65 hrs at peak, and usually 50 hr weeks)
- I was originally going to play it by ear in terms of what I wanted to do after, but it's getting to the point where I want to walk away with no job set up cause of this guy. I figure I'll take a month or two off and enjoy summer. I'll do some regular F500 corp finance gig in the fall or something
Anyways, thoughts? Am I being a bitch cause I want to leave cause of this guy???
Or should I man up and eat it for another year/until I get another job lined up?
Don't leave unless you have another good job lined up. You will almost certainly regret it, trust me.
Agreed - don't go anywhere until you've got another gig in the bag. Start interviewing now, so you have some place soft to land when you give your boss the finger.
Agreed. Don't leave without something lined up. I worked in a small firm with terrible culture and can sympathize with you. After a while it eats away at your soul and you become utterly miserable. While its not worth it to subject yourself to that, the economy is still pretty rough, so its not worth it to outright quit. Just aggressively apply to other positions. Don't let your nice little summer break turns into a year of unemployment.

I'd bolt. Sounds like your experience should get you interviews at decent companies.
The time to start looking for a job is when you have a job, not when you quit a job. Gut it out until you get a different job and resist the urge to tell boss man to go to hell.
Yeah, totally agree with above. Interview and find another job and when you do the next time you're boss goes off like that professionally, but sternly tell him that you will not be talked to like that.
I had a jerk boss a long time ago and he called me into his office to lecture me about "missing days". Mind you, I was literally 5 minutes late during a blizzard and they earned me a lecture about how he was never late, etc. This was basically the straw that broke the camels back. I was interviewing and meeting people on my breaks and he starts berating me, asking if this "missing days" was going to continue.
I looked him dead in the face and said "Do you want me to quit right now or give you my two weeks, let me know now". He starts stuttering and bobbling his words and starts back tracking, asking me if I needed any other time off. I told him yeah, next week because I had to go to NYC for an interview. I witnessed this guy ask someone who had ash Wednesday ash on their head and commented about cig ash and rubbing it on them. He also asked a chunky chick if she was pregnant. Place has a 100% turnover in 6 months, so sad. All because of him.
Find a job and get out of there asap. Banking and finance is always going to have some level of screaming and shit like that, but when a dude is being out right abusive time to get out.
