Am I missing the obvious or was it a failure?

Met up with a vice president/md and have built an excellent report. We have become really really close and he is really really friendly and helpful. I met up and he started to help so much with the interview stage. He told me all the questions they ask, how to answer them, how they compare applicants at interview and how to structure the questions and he said for the interview stage to call him so he can tell me about the people interviewing me. I asked him how to best position myself for an interview and he said this is it. Usually when people ask that question what answer do they get?
He also is also giving me resources and different contacts.
AM I sorted for an interview or not? Should he have said he would be referring me? has he dropped enough hints? Whilst making small talk I said how tough it is too secure an interview and he said that I am better prepared then people.

But thats the thing. I go to a non target and I have a shit GPA. Out of interest when people say how can I be best positioned for an interview what response do they geting any? is it all about getting the hint?

You're missing the obvious and simply doubting yourself imo. Be a little more confident, everything you've mentioned in your post makes it seem like you two have a great relationship and he would most likely go to bat for you.

As you mentioned, "I said how tough it is too secure an interview and he said that I AM better prepared then people."

if you're not at a target for his bank, you can email him around january and say 'i was wondering if i could be considered for a summer analyst position at xyz bank and how I could approach being put in the pool of candidates.' as long as you weren't a freak, he'll help you, at least in my experience.
