Analyst help!!

Hey guys so i am currently at Wilfrid Laurier University (in Canada) and am in the co-op program as well (3 co op terms, 4 months each) . I tried finding an analyst position for my co-op/internship but was unsuccessful in doing so for this term, guessing this is because i haven't had much experience where I could use to transferable skills in the industry. My goal is to get into the Asset Management field. So because i wasn't able to find an analyst position, i ended up taking an accounting position at a smaller firm (can have some upside because usually do more at smaller firms). Hoping that this can get me a financial analyst position in my second term and finally in to AM for my last term. In terms of my marks I currently hold a B+ average and have some extracurriculars such as i am the VP of finance for a club at my university. I am looking forward to getting my CSC (Canadian Securities Course) this summer. So in 8 months when I go back to doing co-op at another firm, i wish to be able to land an analyst position of some sort at an investment company (preferably AM companies). Any ideas on what else I can do to help my self get through the door?

Unfortunately the accounting position won't help you land an analyst position skill wise but at least you'll have something on your resume. I would recommend the following tips;

1) Get your marks up into the honour roll range (So at least an A- average)

2) VP Finance is something, but it's not going to land you any jobs. I would look for something a little more unique. Look into joining Laurier Investment Fund if you can. Maybe even start your own club? Something to separate yourself a little bit.

3) You'll have to be a little more aggressive during the interviewing process. Find students in upper years, or even alumni, that currently work in the area you want to get into, and try and set up a coffee meeting with them. Let them know it's what you want to get into and if there is any way they can help you. More likely than not they will at least be able to do something to help you out.

4) Write the CSC and look to write the CFA level 1 in 4th year.

I know that Laurier finance kids had a tough time with recruiting, especially compared to the accounting program. WLU is still an up and coming school and while Lazaridis school is well respected, finance jobs are still going to Ivey/Queens/Schulich kids first leaving little space for Laurier. Even when they do look at Laurier kids, they look at the double degree students first (I think it's Math at UW/Business at Laurier program). So there's just no enough opportunity to go around.

Good luck and enjoy your time there! (especially MLSB!)
