Analyst: Small natural resources boutique or go for larger firm?

Hey guys,

Long time reader, new member.

I am currently approx 5 months out from graduating (graduate april 2012) and am considering either sticking with my small boutique consulting firm or applying for a larger consulting firm. I don't think I would have much of a chance for MBB with a GPA of 2.9 but I think I would have a shot with a big four or mid-tier with my consulting experience.

At my current firm we specialise in natural resources, mostly in coal. I am working with a team that is implementing a Management Operating System. Most of my work is around creating process documents, excel/word monkey, reviewing work from other consultants etc. Also had an internship at Deloitte (they wanted me to do consulting/accounting so wasn't interested in offer).

I have listed the pros and cons of each that I can think of and it would be great to hear what you guys think.

Small boutique:
Pros:
- Given responsibility early (I hear more 'do whatever you think and we can discuss' lately)
- Director/project manager’s available to contact easily
- Better work/life balance if working in the office
- Likely to get sent off to on-site which is good $$$ (dependent on deal flow though)
- More contact directly with client
- Fantastic culture

Cons:
- Risk of slow deal flow
- Director wants me when I graduate to just 'learn' from working on a range of projects (we also do some safety work (not regulatory)) which I fear may mean low pay and little responsibility/project ownership and thus less job satisfaction
- Non-brand name
- Few people my age (the youngest above me is 28...im almost 20)
- No training available (more of 'learn on the job')
- Relies on a few 'star consultants', if they leave can have strong adverse effects for firm

Large firms:
Pros:
- Well know name
- Likely strong deal flow
- More variety of work
- More people to network with
- More people my age
- Training programs
- Career progression clean
- Easier to exit to industry
- Better chance for more well known MBA school

Cons:
- A while before you get more responsibility
- Little contact with client at analyst level
- Likely long hours
- More politics (I would think)

Any comments would be appreciated.
