Any chance at MBB
Hi, thanks for reading.
I'm a PhD student at a top 5 target school in my discipline, and I'm looking into consulting. Obviously everyone wants to work for MBB, but I want to know if I have any chance of making it.
My standardized test scores are not so great:
GRE math 158
ACT math 28 (29 composite)
MCAT 31 composite
My undergrad GPA is good (3.75) pretty much 4.0 in math/science
Grad GPA is OK (3.6)
I have experience with outreach teaching science to high school kids.
I have multiple publications in highly respected journals.
I'm in leadership roles in my research group and in the department.
FWIW I gave a commencement speech when I graduated and got awards and things.
All this being said, I know my test scores are low, but are they a deal breaker? I have another 2.5 years until I graduate, and I am fairly sure I have the problem solving/analytical skills necessary, but I have read that test scores are important.
I would appreciate brutal honesty, because I don't want to devote a bunch of time to making myself a better applicant if it's already predetermined that I'm out.
I don't have to go to MBB but I won't pursue consulting unless I can get an offer at a reasonably prestigious firm.
Thanks!
I think it is highly dependent on what field your PhD is in. Without knowing that, it is pretty much impossible to give you an honest assessment.
