Best Consulting Firm for Media & Entertainment
Does anyone have any recommendations on how to structure my Strategy Consulting Job search if I am dead set on going into the Media & Entertainment practice? Direct Questions Include:
-
Which firm is the best for the Media & Entertainment practice?
-
Will I even get to choose if I am selected to interview for the company?
-
Does having a preference in practice have any impact on recruitment?
The large media & entertainment companies are owned by major conglomerates and don't usually farm out too much "strategy" work to the strategy consulting firms. They have their own corp. strategy teams that do a lot of it for them and are staffed with ex-consultants. Most of their work given to firms is going to be ops stuff (pricing projects, integration, systems, etc.), sometimes to a MBB but usually to one of the Big 4 or Accenture. The smaller media companies might have some more strategic projects - but still much more ops work - which I've seen go to either a Big 4 or one step down (OW, A&M). I probably wouldn't go to LEK if M&E is a desired focus - every TMT company I know which has hired them has been very unhappy with their M&E work (even ops).
Big 4 is a great "sweet-spot" for pure M&E exposure, but you should be aware that most of the work is going to be ops stuff. I'd evaluate whether you want M&E OR Strategy because I think a specialization in both is going to be impossible as a staff.
Really? I thought LEK was well-regarded for their TMT practice
Not from what I have seen. Currently serving a TMT client which hired us to follow up on some work LEK did. Not going to complain, we get paid to correct what they did and move it forward, but this isn't the first time I've seen that happen.
I reached out to my network for advice on the matter before posting here and they gave a me a name of a boutique shop that does this type of work. I'm posting it here just in case someone had the same question as I did.
Its called Activate (http://activate.com). They may be a bit off the Media & Entertainment center, but they're the closest thing I could find.
I was told they were founded in 2010 by a former partner in the Mckinsey Media & Entertainment practice. Look them up on LinkedIn, they have a few heavy hitters (https://www.linkedin.com/company/activate_2?trk=company_logo).
Opinions and input are welcome. Any advice on how to best approach a boutique shop like this with no online app would be much appreciated. I would assume emailing the recruiter cold is the best approach.
Working at a PE shop and we generally use LEK on Media mandates. I remembered they partnered on some analysis with a boutique called Massarsky Consulting too.
Hope that helps a bit, don't have much more insight on this.
Look at altman vilandrie - has media side. Not entertainment though.
I believe Booz & Co (now Strategy&) has a strong media trackrecord and team, at least in MENA & Europe. We worked with them in MENA region for a market entry strategy, they were quite good. They basically did mng consulting for every major media group in the region.
Any Media Strategy Consulting Firms? (Originally Posted: 07/27/2013)
Hey guys.
Would anyone happen to know of any consulting firms which focus on management/strategy consulting within the media industry; specifically, film? Looking for something like Ironwood Advisory, but preferably in the NYC area.
Not looking for top firms, as I am a non-target, but I don't think shooting for boutiques is outlandish. I'm currently interning in business development at a small media company, so I assume that experience can be leveraged?
Thanks for your help.
OC&C is a boutique strategy player focusing in media and based out of Boston. trying to move into retail but still huge media focus.
(info only applicable in the US. not sure what they do in europe)
I think OC&C may be a bit out of my league, but thanks for the info!
I would like to know more about this as well. Do boutique's recruit out of undergrad or is it mainly boutique?
Frank Magid does media consulting. I don't know much about it, one of my friend's dads works there.
