Any point networking with non-relevant divisions?
Assuming that I am aiming IBD, is there any point networking with those in S&T, or Risk or Back office roles other than trying to get referrals in the IB division? Should I try to network exclusively with ONLY those working in IBD?
I think there would be some within those non-IBD departments you mentioned that might not be so receptive to you if you're talking to them for the purpose of getting a name of someone within IBD. However, if you come across the right way and it's a nice person, then you may be lucky. They may know people within IBD and could refer you. So I'd approach with some caution in mind and try and gauge what you think their receptiveness would be if you were to open up to them.
If you did have the opportunity to network or otherwise reach out to those from IBD then you'd best spend your energy exploring that avenue in the first instance I think.
What is wrong with just building a network across industries, groups, divisions, etc. It can never hurt you to have more people know your name at a bank (assuming its in a good way). Its a small street and you never know who knows who
