Any surfers in NYC ?

Hey all,

I am moving to NYC in July to begin my MBA at NYU. I grew up in Virginia Beach and lived in San Diego for awhile and have been into surfing since I was a kid. I know the surf in Rockaway is pretty good and am looking for people to get in touch with who know the ins and outs of the surf scene in New York. Feel free to PM me if you want.

Thanks.

The Rockaways are among the best surf spots on the East Coast because the peninsula is right on the ocean and the waves can get pretty furious at times which is fantastic. In fact the Quicksilver Pro Surfing competition hosts its annual East Coast contests every September right in Long Beach, across the Nassau County line.

I am more of a bodysurfer myself but I am sure you can find community of good surfers in the NYC area. The past few years we haven't had that many great waves here, notwithstanding Hurricane Sandy, hopefully we will get more actions this year.

Too late for second-guessing Too late to go back to sleep.

Old thread, don't know if you're still active but... Beach 90th street has a huge surf scene. I go there all the time and catch solid waves and have gnarly wipe outs. That being said, summer it's pretty flat unless there's a hurricane/tropical storm that comes. Usually very annoying to surf with a short board as the scene is usually filled with long boarders. There are good days for short boarding as well, but it's so much easier to just catch waves with a long board and have fun that way.

I suggest avoiding Beach 66th/67th as I've heard nasty rumors of that place. The surfers there are dick heads and won't be afraid to run you over when they catch a wave. Much harsher environment. As for Beach 30th, I've never been but have been told I can park my car by the lifeguard shack since my old life guard chief is very good friends with the chief in that section. I've never been but have heard they get decent swell. Avoid Beach 110/111 at all costs because it's just pretty trash and dead. The swell is unpredictable, much like it is in all of Rockaway but even then the waves are just trash and they always break on the shore.

Also one of the best part about surfing on 90th is there are motherfucking dolphins that are always there. Just a rad observation.
