Jefferies Equity Research

I may have a phone interview coming up with them in the next few days.

Any tips?

I'm pretty sure that they're always been pretty well respected in research. Does anyone know if any stars have left?

Also, I'm trying to get a list of their ranked analysts. What is the best metric? I don't know what it more accurate: WSJ's Best on the Street or StarMine? Jefferies is depicted really well on Starmine and mediocre on WSJ's Best on the Street. Are there other metrics I should be using like II (any place that offers that for free)?

Thanks in advance

I'd say their overall quality of research is near the top - don't listen to "wannabe" above who is still in undergrad, he is just regurgitating the same sh#t you hear on here all day by other undergrad know-nothings. I work at a BB and we have a ton of respect for the research put out by the analysts in our sector at MM shops. You can't hide behind the name of your company once you actually are in the industry.

Comp for research at Jefferies is in-line with the BBs, so nothing to worry about there. However, as with any job in research, make sure you're a good fit with your analyst and the current team, because that's who you will be working with day and night. Also try and gauge how well they will mentor you - that is key for junior positions.

Not sure, but I would guess that you won't deal with as many of the top tier buy-side shops, since they probably deal more with BBs due to the large S&T force, but you'll still have a ton of buy-side client interaction. If you find that you don't like it and want to go somewhere else after some time, you can do it - lateraling to other firms is really not that difficult. Good luck.

Here's an important question:

all else equal, is working for a ranked analyst @ a BB about the same as working for a ranked analyst @ a boutique?

I can see how a BB firm in general is more prestigious but other than that?

I would echo what Bowser said--Jefferies is getting a lot of top people from BBs anyway.

KarateBoy, I like the BB ranked analyst because of the network. It's easier to go buyside from a BB ranked analyst's coverage group than from a boutique--you can also go over to the asset side internally (i.e. one of their long/short funds). That's not to say boutiques don't have that, because some do. I think you get more options by going to a BB. Again, it depends on the quality of your relationship with the analyst.

eresearcher, thank you for the quick reply.

I figured as much but I wanted confirmation.

Glad to hear that they are respected and buying top talent.

I just did a phone interview, not with jefferies but with a BB. Here is what helped me the most: Know the DCF and how it works in detail. The best way is get a model and when the call comes in sit in front of it so you can walk through it. This scored me huge points. They said "you would be surprised at how many peopleo claim they have this experience and cant walk through it". Also, know why equity research and how you chose it, they will want to know this. I didn’t get many technicals like $10 of depreciation does what to the statements etc. but that is probably because I nailed walking through a DCF. Be able to walk through your resume starting with the farthest out and moving to the most recent experience. When they ask to tell about yourself, start with your schooling and move to through the resume in that way. Relate all your experience to how you did it because you thought it would help in a career in ER and this has always been what you wanted. A good question to ask is how the company translates ER reports in revenue, and how you would love to do what they say is how they do.

I am giving tips, I don’t know about analyst rankings.
