Applying for Consulting Internships with low GPA
Hey Guys,
I am a grad student at NYU (not the business school) I want to apply for a Business Consulting Internship over the summer. Sadly, I have a GPA of 3.33 and i feel like that doesn't cut it specially for firms like Deloitte and PwC. I know for sure that I can raise my GPA to at least 3.5 in my current semester. How do I know this? I kinda got screwed over last semester because of this one professor, which I know will not happen again.
My question is- Can I put a 3.5 on my resume because I am certain I will achieve it this semester (CGPA) before my internship starts (over the summer). Please let me know what you guys think. I need all the help I can get.
Thanks!
Putting a 3.5 would be considered lying. It is up to you whether you should do this. From my experience, PwC and Deloitte asks for your transcript when you submit your OCR application (I don't go to NYU for the record) before you even get a first round interview. Also, when you apply online, I think they will ask for your exact GPA and you will have to round down to select GPA cutoffs from a drop-down menu. So, a 3.33 becomes a 3.3. However, a 3.33 is completely fine to get an internship with Deloitte and PwC in their consulting practice. You will probably not get into strategy consulting but getting into technology consulting should be very possible (management and risk consulting might be tougher but still very possible). My GPA was exactly the same as yours when applied (from a much lower-tier state school) and I still got an internship with them.
What? No, of course not
Doubt you'd be able to do this as most internship apps are through your school's jobs website.
Don't go there. "Small" compromises lead to big problems.
These posts about false GPAs are starting to get ridiculous. No matter what happened before, you cannot guarantee your GPA until it has finalized. Do not lie.
Consulting Internship with low GPA? (Originally Posted: 11/14/2012)
So I'm currently a junior at Northwestern looking into summer internships. Unfortunately, I'm realizing that my 3.35 gpa in math/econ doesn't seem to be cutting it, especially considering that internship recruitment is more selective than full-time recruitment. I'm expecting to move my gpa up to a 3.42-3.47 before I apply for full-time positions, but it seems pretty crucial that I have some internship experience under my belt before I go through that process. So, given my situation, what would you suggest? Do I still have a reasonable chance at firms like Deloitte, PwC, ZS, or LEK? Or should I try for boutique consulting firms, which I would assume aren't as competitive? If so, which boutiques would you recommend looking into, as Im figuring out that smaller firms generally dont offer internship positions? Or should I try applying for an internship at a less competitive field? Any help is appreciated.
.
what would you say is the cutoff GPA for consulting?
I know of someone who got interviews at PwC, Deloitte, and bain with a 3.2 gpa from UCLA. Unfortunately, he did not get pass the first round on all interviews. Seems like he was just filler for hr. He told me, the interviews were pretty informal and didn't last the scheduled 30 minutes. It was like they only chose him to fill up space.
Strongman- Which F500 is his dad CxO of?
one thing i'm curious about, is what do consulting recruiters look for in terms of relevant background experience when selecting people for first round interviews? i just accepted a job at a BB, but throughout the recruiting process i probably applied to 10 or so consulting firms and didn't get any interviews. most of my previous experience was in finance, but i've been wondering how some people seem to swing full time finance and consulting recruiting at the same time
Have Referrals, should I include low GPA on resume? Entry-Level Consulting (Originally Posted: 07/04/2014)
Hi,
I'm a recent graduate from a top university.
I am entering into the recruiting cycle for the January 2015 Start date class
I was wondering if I should include my GPA (3.13 [3.8 senior year]) Major (3.2 [4.0 senior year]) on my resume if I already have referrals at all of the firms I'm applying to (not MBB) but things thereafter
Firms include: Kurt Salmon, Accenture, BearingPoint, Oliver Wyman, Capgemini, PwC and the rest of the big 4 advisory, and some other smaller firms
I assume with a referral you get the first round interview, but is there any chance that I could be dinged in spite of a referral by not having my GPA listed? I am asking this because some firms have a requirement.
So it, puts me in a funny situation
short answer to your primary question: no short answer to your second question: yes
PM for more advice
Agreed with what matayo said. Idk how much knowledge matayo has in recruiting for consulting, but having been through the process, I can give you some specific advice. The biggest thing is that the GPA "requirements" of 3.5+ are in large part suggestions for where the students should be but at least one if not a few of the firms mentioned have internal rules that require a 3.2 to get the job. You may get away with not having your GPA on resume but when they run background checks and see that you have a below a 3.2, they could/will rescind the offer. PM for more advice and details.
Low GPA but somewhat differentiated application (Originally Posted: 06/28/2017)
Hi there,
I was wondering if my background in tech would help on a consulting app. I have a GPA of only 3.3 as a finance and marketing major(possible Spanish minor as well). In terms of work experience I interned as a account development associate at a smallish software company as well as helping creating a strategy and marketing plan for an app that is Beta testing at my college. I also have code literacy in several different coding languages due to the fact that I attended a coding bootcamp over the summer. Which is useful as well as helping improve quantitative reasoning. I'm also excel certified. I don't think I have a chance at MBB, but what about 2nd tier firms like Accenture. Basically I'm asking if should look into management consulting or just stick more with the tech side.
Where did u get the excel certification
Through my school. Which does it through Microsoft.
What kind of school are you attending and are you looking for an internship or FT?
