Opportunities after a French Business School

Hello everyone,

I'm going to integrate Skema business school which is a top10 french business school. I don't plan to work in France after my studies because of the corporate ladder with is quite hard to climb if you didn't make a top3 school (HEC-ESSEC-ESCP) especially for high-flying jobs in top mangement, management strategy, market finance... I've heard some stories telling that when you are 50yo, ESSEC graduated, trying to be the chairman of a CAC40 after a top career you still have no chance against a HEC one who might be less effective than you. The culture and the mentality are quite "elitist".

Let's talk about finance. SKEMA is ranked #10 by the FT in the pre-experience master in finance. I don't know what it worths in a foreign country such as HK, Luxembourg, USA, Mexico... but here are some aluminis :
-Promo 2005-2012 : http://www.skema.edu/programs/masters-of-science/alumni-of-msc-financia…
-Promo 2000-2004 : http://www.skema.edu/programs/masters-of-science/alumni-of-this-msc-200…

Today some of them are in JP Morgan, Rothschild, Soc-Générale in HK (sales, risk, exotic trading).. Could you tell me if the jobs are OK (wages, bonus, difference of opportunities btw france and foreign countries...) ?

Second point concerning corporate finance. My school has just signed a new Msc in corporate finance with Strathclyde. Does this university is recognized in Uk/worldwide ? Are there any opportunities in M&A ?

My school also has a campus in Raleigh, USA and cooperate with North Carolina University. What are the main assets of this university ? I know Skema has some partnerships (and double diploma) with good US universities (#40-80 in USCollege).

Thanks for any reply :D

I can't see what you are looking for. Are you looking for someone who tells you that SKEMA is a good school? It looks to me that the placement is ok in second/third tier banks (for markets only) and asset management. What does "are any opportunity in M&A" mean? The investment banking market is not recruiting heavily but there are always some spots available, especially for internship. The fact is that SKEMA is not a target school and therefore it will be quite difficult to get a job in investment banking (M&A). Having said that, if you apply to early to any single bank that offer internships, you may find something.

I'm grateful that I have two middle fingers, I only wish I had more.

Thanks for the reply.

I just want to know what kind of jobs/wages I may have after being graduated. I'm ready to move all around the world to get the best job possible according to my diploma. I'd be ready to candidate to some US universities as a international student (top20-30?) to better my employability.

What are the main differences between tier1, tier 2 and tier3 in job opportunities and wages?

What are the target schools in M&A? Doesn't it depend on the country you are ?

Target schools in France are HEC, ESSEC, ESCP. Sometimes people from EM Lyon or EDHEC also make the cut. Yes, it depends on the country. In Italy the target schools are Bocconi and maybe LUISS and Polimi, in England LSE, Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Warwick, etc. and so on...

A tier 1 bank usually gives you an higher visibility in terms of exit opportunities (to move to better paying employers, different job, etc.)

Relax. Any job in high finance will pay you well...

I'm grateful that I have two middle fingers, I only wish I had more.

I've compared some wages in London btw tiers 1 and tiers 2 (quantitativist, sales, structuring, trading) and the differences between the two are tigh in terms of wages (with and without bonus). (available from the associate to the managing director).

I don't have any idea about what to do later.

Salary is usually the same or close as you already said. Just start college and apply around, try to get top marks and some international exposure...

I'm grateful that I have two middle fingers, I only wish I had more.

I'm confident Management strategy is unreachable out of HEC-ESSEC-ESCP. So what's the best field to go in besides market finance ?

When you talk about top marks you mean Merrill Lynch (I've a contact out there), JP Morgan, UBS, Barclay etc ? Can i afford F-O tasks after Skema and its master in finance ? What range of wages can i expect ? I'm also confident that my future is abroad (culture of elitism in France, wages and high taxes...)

What would you do if you were in my position ?

I got admit from skema fall 2016 . can you please provide me with the details regarding everything.

I'd like to add that I am looking for books to learn more about commodity trading as I have no major for instance - the Msc in science of management is quite general and the specialization comes in year two. I have oil101, geman's book and oil for beginner (Deutsche Bank note). an alumny from my school working for shell trading adviced me to read them. I'm looking for other files maybe more synthetic of shorter...! If you have some ;0

Best! JS

I've done my whole education until my baccalaureate in a french lycée. I was never interested in studying in France (or working there), because I can't stand the French mentality and that the way things work in France is a catastrophe. But I never heard of Skema. Or maybe it rings a bell, but I'm not even sure about that. I'm not trying to discourage you, but what I'm saying is that if you want to aim at big salaries and big firms such as GS, JPM and others, you might want to think about doing a MBA in an internationally recognized school (I'm talking beyond a Grande École). The firms you re aiming for can allow themselves to pick the best of the best of the best of Oxbridge/LSE/Harvard and co. So idk how much they'll look into Skema. But then again, in the end it's not your degree that does the work for you, but it is you who makes the difference. I know employers who don't even look at the CV of new candidates before the first interview.
