Asset Mgt Sales to Hedge Fund Analyst?
Hello everyone,
Was wondering if the conversion is common for a graduate who starts out in asset mgt sales at a large global firm to later on switch to hedge fund analyst/portfolio manager? Also, is it rare to internal transfer from sales to investment analyst/pm roles?
I'm about to graduate and see an opportunity presenting itself to work in an institutional sales capacity. I currently have another option to join a start-up hedge fund. Ultimately, my goal is to become a fund manager, preferably at a large global organization or my own fund. I'd like to know which one would be a better choice to that end. Tks in advance.

Sales will only get you in to fund raising / IR roles most of the time.

definitely join the start up,
definitely join the start up, you said that you want long term to be a manager or managing your own fund, you will have a much better shot at having those responsibilities sooner if you get in on the ground floor so to speak. Plus it will be a great learning experience, that will give you great exit ops, if the fund doesn't work out as expected.
