At Least 1 in 4 Harvard Grads Skip Sex In College

If you've been around WSO long enough to witness all of the "How do I talk to another human being?!?!" threads, perhaps this won't surprise you, but a survey by the Harvard Crimson of graduating seniors showed that 1 in 4 Harvard students simply skip out on sex during college.

The survey goes on to claim that "viewing pornography was significantly more popular among surveyed men, 45 percent of whom said they watched it multiple times a week while in college."

Now, remember that this is self-reported data, meaning that it's very likely that more than 1 in 4 Harvard undergrads graduate with their virginity in tact and almost a certainty that more than 45% of the men silently stroke one off in their rooms.

If you ever feel bad about not going to a target school, remember that you are far more likely to have touched a member of the opposite sex in your lifetime.

Can you blame them? They're busy as hell, more likely to be on the "aspie" end of the spectrum(mild savantism), and quite frankly I wouldn't touch most "ambitious women with opinions and career goals" with a ten foot pole even if the circus show at Columbia hadn't made it clear that sleeping with another student at your college is a dicey proposition.

Bigass_Spider:

No one is that busy. But anyway, some of these statistics are depressing. 74% of black kids feel marginalized because of race, and 67% of people feel marginalized because of socioeconomic status? Wow. Also, its funny that everyone on this board talks about how CS/Engineering interest growth is outpacing Finance/Consulting when these stats show that to be incredibly false.

So? I did my split undergraduate at a school(with Tech in the name) that's in a similar situation: notoriously bad dating scene on campus but lots of attractive southern belles at a major university that was literally on the other side of the road.

Your schedule makes it difficult for most people. While there some social venues that allow you to interact at the other school, most people are busy enough that you simply don't have time to build up a social life outside the people you work with in class and on projects all day.

chobani:

The only school that could possibly fit your description based on location is Georgia Tech and Emory... and Emory is definitely not where I'd go looking for "southern belles".

Think again. Emory is a good 15 minute drive away, not "on the other side of the street"....and belles may be an exagerration but there were a lot of cute girls at the other school I'm thinking of.

"You simply don't have time to build up a social life outside the people you work with in class and on projects all day."

This might be the most depressing statement I've read in a long time. Unless you are in your first year at a military academy you can't honestly say that you're too busy to go out and get laid.

I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I had plenty of sex in college and still watched porn almost daily.... do I have issues?

I think that makes you a normal man, although I suppose I didn't watch porn quite that much

NESCAC I am black, pretty chill, and when I went to my state school that was the first time I felt the reality of racism. Not to say I didn't have plenty of friends of all races and plenty of fun but when you're walking to your apartment from campus at night and a group of 2 white girls see you coming from behind and go into a near sprint you just can't shake that feeling. When you are at a frat bar party and some douche is in your grill because you're getting play from chics and are one of the few black guys there you just don't shake that feeling (douche got one of his friends to sucker punch me after talking shit all night, luckily one of my friends laid him out lol).

I'm not so sure if that happened cause you're black, I've had that happen to me and I'm white. Frat dudes just like to start shit especially when other guys are getting laid and they are not. By the way I was in a frat myself.

State schools esp what I've seen in the south are like that, very backward places

Your headline is too nice "Skip Sex in College" @CRE. To me "skip" implies a conscious decision.

I feel like for some of these weirdos it might apply, though. Scroll up for the poster who said his schedule made it too difficult to get laid.

In college I was a double major and worked nearly full time. In my younger pre-marriage adult life (cuz you can actually get laid when you want when you're married, at least most of the time, and before kids...) I worked 80-100 hr weeks for years on end, traveled a couple hundred thousand miles a year on average and the things I always got done were eating, shitting, showering and fucking. And not necessarily in that order.

Depriving yourself of sex is just stupid. That's like Mickey's speech to Rocky as he's training for the fight saying women weaken knees. No, they don't...

^^This cracked me up. I love MD talk. "I've gotta get my ducks in a row for this group project next week, it's mission critical"

In reality, I don't think alot of these kids have any interaction with chicks whatsoever.

I picture these kids in a all-male dorm, wearing a head set, playing some network video game on a self built PC, while crushing a 12 pack of Coke heavy.

Honestly unless you have a consistent booty call, getting it in can take your whole night over cause the girl isn't just going to hop right in bed ...but of course then you still blow the night and regret it come test day lol

I don't see what's the big deal. It could be their choice - maybe some of them didn't have an opportunity, don't know a girl they could hook up with or are physically unattractive, I highly doubt chicks are going to drop their panties because they study at Harvard.

these guys bring a whole new meaning to the phrase "Fuck bitches, get money!" Biggie is rolling in his grave right now.

Went to a non-target just down the street from an Ivy. Some of the athletes would clean up - although from what I observed it was a little different for the average student. After their opening line of "I'm studying finance (or pre-med)", which understandably gets the attention of most females, what followed next was mostly crash and burn. I get that stress level at the Ivys can be extremely high, and rare nights out you just want to get as intoxicated as humanly possible. At the time it made me a little more content with my school. I say this now, but they have a degree from a prestigious school, which they may value more than experience with females. Although, I did enjoy having access to attractive girls - that were also dumb enough to eat up the bs I was telling them.

Don't want to generalize, I'm sure there were plenty of kids that had no problem with the ladies.

wilhug I am going to guess that money at Harvard UG is wisely invested in Premium Brazzers Accounts. A porn site so amazing that it trumps any snapper in the Greater Boston area. Crimson students evaluate this as a time, cost, benefit thing and would rather watch Johnny Sins go to town for 5 mins before they go to Harvard Square, liquor up/tear down a wild animal from their economics class and lose a night of studying. This data does not surprise me.

I cant believe that I actually read majority of the comments, but here goes. 1.what school you go to is just ONE of the factors and actually a pretty small one when it comes to getting laid, Its just one of the pretty shitty excuses people make because of whatever reason they are not getting laid.

  1. racism is a problem where I live too, Its rather subtle, tho. Thats definitely a more relevant and difficult barrier to overcome while getting laid
Let me live so when I die the reaper cries..

Not gonna lie, going to Harvard may make it easier to get a good job, but these stats are depressing and honestly would make me think twice before going there.

Why? 75% of the student body is getting laid. Have some more faith in yourself man.

I think you're interpreting the stats incorrectly here...

Going to Harvard doesn't suddenly make you incapable of or uninterested in sex. It's more like people who are incapable of or uninterested in sex just happen to go to Harvard in clusters.

Of course it doesn't, but why go to school with a lame crowd. Maybe the stats are worse at other schools, who knows.

Trust me, I don't fit into that 21% at all.

Honestly, money trumps prestige when it comes to getting girls. The only reason a girl would be attracted to you going to Harvard would be her assumption that you will be successful.

You don't need money to get girls but you'd have to be pretty ignorant to think that it won't help

If you pull up in a Ferrari, the girl won't ask if you're from a non target lol

I would actually think that because this is self-reported, it looks a lot worse than it really is. Only half of the class responded and I would suspect that many of the same very studious and likely to forego human interaction students are going to predominantly respond to this survey. Could be totally wrong, but I don't think that's a crazy thought.

That said, i think this speaks to why super high GPA's and academics only go so far in translating to real life skills. People forego human interaction in social settings and although they can crank out formulas and work like crazy, they lack the requisite ability to really excel in later stages of their career. I think this makes it even tougher for people as they network and transition later in their careers without the requisite social aptitude required. Not that they can't overcome it or do extraordinarily well, but it certainly helps to have a high EQ in the real world outside of school.

Interesting and quick response from boston.com: http://www.boston.com/news/education/2015/05/28/chill-out-guys-harvard-…

And in particular the one part "a study collected from 1,500 Duke University freshmen and seniors at the Durham, N.C., campus in 2007 found that about 53 percent of women and 40 percent of the men said they were virgins." Southern fratboys are getting it less than Cambridge nerds?

Facts and context are so boring. Let the kids point and laugh a little, it will make them feel so much better about their un or under-employment.

Yeah the 25% are usually the asians and dorky STEM kids. The athletes and final club members (especially porc, A.D., Owl) do extremely well with the boston area girls. There are joint mixers with Wellesley and BU sororities. Not as much with BC since they are further out.
