Bachelor at non-target and Master at target?
Hello everyone, I am 19 years old and finished my A-Levels last year. In October I will begin to study economics at a non-target School. I want to get into IB, but don't know how to score an internship at a BB or Boutique Bank coming from a non-target School. My question is, how relevant is my bachelor after I recieve my masters degree in finance at a target University?
Network! Network! Network!
A lot of people here say that you cant break into IB if you dont go to target/semi target/Sleeper semi target but many had done it. Consider masters as backup plan and not the only plan
If you check the summer analyst class of Goldman Sachs in London, someone had got in with a degree from DMU,MMU, and even LondonMet. So can you! Concentrate on getting preparing yourself to be presentable and improve your communication skills. Try to attend networking events and dont miss a single chance to network with the people in the city. You may not know who is gonna suggest you to the HR. Stay positive
Masters degree - Non-target undergrad (Originally Posted: 08/30/2013)
If a person went to an non target undergraduate and did not do any internships, is their any point in doing a masters degree at a top university? Could you do an internship after completing masters? Do you need to do masters to become a full time analyst if you go to a top university?
If you went to a non-target and didn't do any internships, moving to a target university would be a good move on your side. I would advise you to go for a 2 year program though, so that you have 1 summer to do internships. Where are you located? UK?
You don't need a masters to go FT, no. But you usually need that internship beforehand.
thanks. I am in the UK. The majority of masters in maths are one year though. I hear that people do internships in their third year after graduating, hr at Goldmans confirmed this. so would it not be ok to do internship after masters in 4th year? as far as they are concerned you may be intending to to phd
Yes, I have met a few people who did an internship after completing their master's degrees in London. It's not a bad option, you just have to kill time in between the internship and your official start date. Some banks are lenient and allow you to come aboard earlier.
Thanks man so their is hope?I am thinking about doing one in operations next summer, in the second year. better then doing no internship I suppose. What do you mean time range between internship and start date?
Do you want to be in the middle office of a bank or in a front office role? If you want FO, apply for it.
Well the internship would take place in the summer and you would then start FT in the summer the following year. So you would have to do something else for roughly 9-10 months.
£IB£: I went to a non-target in the US, non-finance subject, then got a master's from Oxbridge, also non-finance, got a 6 month internship straight away followed by a FT offer. PM me if you need more info.
wow that is amazing. something what I am trying to do.
It is quite common actually. I did my BSc in an unknown university in Europe, then went to a target school for a 2 yrs MSc and while there did 1 internship in back office (where i received a full time offer) and then another 1 in front office at the end of the program (and received a FT offer)... My advice is to apply also for off-cycle internship because they are easier to get...
Cool well done mate. I suppose with investment banking it depends on how much effort your willing to put in? Any tips for a person about to start their second year?
Apply to every single bank, BB, EB, mid-market, etc. And try do to every application in the best way possible.
thanks mate
