Bankers looking down on each other

For those in the business, do you guys ever judge other bankers based on their groups? I was out with some friends today and met some other bankers. The first thing asked is "where do you work" followed by "what group".

So we exchanged info and as I'm walking away one of my friends starts ragging on the other bankers since one of them was capital markets (not real banking) and the others were both in mediocre groups for those that specific bank (consumer, industrials, etc.) rather than the more well-respected groups.

Meanwhile my friend is in M&A so he thinks he is clearly superior over them although they work at a top BB (MS/GS) and he works in a lower tier BB.

Do you guys experience this too or is my friend just being a douche? Oh he also makes fun of GS IBD a lot (if its not TMT).

Please tell me it is because there's nothing more disturbing than someone expressing their insecurities in such a manner.

Only a loser would do such a thing in order to feel good about himself. Congratulate, don't Hate! Hater

Confirmed - your friend is a loser. Do we all secretly think we're somehow slightly "better" than the guy at that 4th tier bank - yeah we do, it's human nature particularly if you're as competitive as most in the industry, but that's about as far as it'll go. That said most will keep those thoughts to themselves. As for groups within banks etc - that's just rediculous...

You guys should try working in the fashion industry. If someone wasn't in the new Georgio campaign noone would want a bar of them. I expected better from the banking industry though, even though people are less "pretty" (for lack of a better word).

Tsk tsk

Such tools....wow

If you work 80 hours a week in cap markets and have time to work out 3x a week, vs 90 hours a week in M&A with no time to work out in a top group...you get laid more being in cap markets because you are in better shape and a drunk girl at joshua tree can't tell anything about you besides that you work in finance....

those 10 hours make all the difference...

But obviously the op's "friend" is a loser. LSO should come back...

Hey, I am just curious. You know the pictures that accompany these threads right? Like the one above that shows people looking down. How the heck do they find suitable pictures for that ? They seem to match up the titles of the threads very well but it seems like so much work for a couple of guys to do manually. Is there some type of formula or computer thingy ma jiggy that they use to generate the pictures automatically or something ?

You will occasionally hear mid level guys/even some senior guys rip on other banks, lightly, but it's largely with merit regarding a certain transaction (ie. a banker at X bank did a horrible job on a deal) or something....not directed at an entire bank.

I've hear some super lame first years at some banks think they were the shit, but I think most bankers are pretty humble in that respect - and realize how silly and un-presitigous this job really is. most bankers i know are pretty cynical (including myself) towards the job, and realize there are a lot of other things in this life we'd rather do than build models and spread comps.

This is tantamount to Ivy Leaguers looking down on people who go to state schools or less prestigious schools. Except for that with Investmest Banking, nearly everyone is successful in a sense just for being there and every front office banking job is still among the top 1% of all finance jobs. All of these jobs are highly sought after and highly paid! Why the hate? Get a grip people! A grip full of boob and less keyboard.

Logan Zoolander gets my best new user award.

Ha, it's funny you mention Zoolander because Ben actually consulted with me whilst filming it to make sure he got his technique right. You know that line "who wants an orange mocha frappachino?" - well that was actually based on me and my "model-buddies'" sunday morning brunch theatrics. In fact the whole situation has been pretty ironic because prior to my banking career I consulted with Ben to brushen up on my "banker" image and he hooked me up with Michael (Douglas) - who is an absolute gentlemen by the way - to return the favour.

In summary: I am better than you.

Seriously, it's like laughing at the other people shopping at Walmart.

Overhead in aisle 12: "Check out the orange juice that guy is buying. He must work in BO, for sure!"
