Are IB summer internships in London good enough for NY FT?

I live in Europe and have a IB summer internship in London, but ultimately I want to work in NY. How much is a summer internship in London at a global IB worth when applying to NY graduate positions?

it shouldn't matter much as long as the bank you work at this summer is well known and you get good experience there. I know someone who worked at a London BB and ended up in NY full time at an elite boutique, through OCR. If there are NY FT postings at your school, then you should be fine. Otherwise, you'll have to network.

Probably network, my school is in eastern europe... but how can one manage networking with people in NY from other banks, with the workload you have in IB.. do you think it is possible if one works in London to get assigned to a NY position in the same bank?

cuz compensation in london is shitty now with all the new reforms and the deferred bonus structure

well for many reasons, for me NY is way better than London, London is just another European city, they all have the same basic look, don't need any more of those for a while, thank you very much.... Europe is really socialist about pay, regulation etc... London underground and city layout suck... you dont even feel you're in a massive city, you feel the same as in Munich or prague....

so i have my reasons, but I'm concerned about the worth of a London internship in NY..

Also interested. I'm from Germany and I managed to get a summer internship at a BB in London (harder than Frankfurt). London is cool, but my ultimate goal has always been to live in the United States. I've heard from a friend (lower end BB, I think UBS) that he spent the summer internship in London and signed full time in New York. Now I guess that's pretty hard to pull off, but how about: 2 years in London as an analyst => Ivy League MBA => NY PE / BB associate?

exactly, i have the same plan but don't know if it's as simple as it seems....

And i don't see why work permits would be an issue.... and flying us to NY is NO problem, since my internship bank spent 1000 pounds, so 1600 dollars on getting me to london and paying for the hotel.... just for the internship...

youll have two issues working against you.

1: Your not in the states, why would a bank fly you in to interview you when they've got 123040912091094 other as qualified candidates that they can interview. This point is pretty huge, I know lots of kids that did years abroad in the states(from european unis) in their penultimate years. They couldn't get internships in the states cuz of work permit issues, and because banks know their going back to europe, and they couldn't get anything in europe cuz banks wouldn't really fly them in and only do telephone interviews which puts you at a disadvantage. 2: You need a work permit, americans don't.

Your best bet is trying to get a return offer from your summer place and turn that into a new york offer at the same bank rather than london. You might also be able to transfer internally to NY after working in london for a bit, I know several people that this at BBs.

Have you guys ever lived in both places? London is a MUCH nicer city to live in, and your take home pay after tax is almost identical. Seriously, find me a neighborhood as nice as Mayfair, Chelsea, or Marylebone in NYC?

Granted food and weather is better in NYC, I will give you that.

if you can manage to get a Visa for the us, you should have no problem in getting a job there. the internship at the bb can only help you in terms of previous relevant experience. a side note: how did you end up getting an IB gig at a BB as a high school graduate?
