Can anyone give more info on MIDDLE OFFICE jobs at a BB?

I see a lot of information on front office roles, but barely any on MO positions. I attend a top 20 semi-target.

  1. How competitive is it to get middle office jobs such as risk management at BB or elite boutiques? I know FO jobs are extremely competitive, but what's it like for MO?

  2. How much do analysts in risk management make? Are there decent exit opportunities?

  3. I plan on getting an MBA, so is it worth it to stick it out in Middle office job with less pay and prestige for a couple years to have a BB name on my resume?

  4. Are there any advancement opportunities to the front office?

  5. Does risk management look to hire more MBA/grad students or can you get a job straight out of undergrad?

  6. Would it be better to work in the Big 4 public audit or Consulting at Big4 and other second tier consulting firms?

  1. MO jobs are decently competitive - not to the level of front office but you still need relevant work experience, solid GPA and networking
  2. First year Risk analyst is probably in the range of $60-$75k + maybe a 5%-15% year end bonus. Exit opportunities are limited to lateraling to better firm or going to FO. Haven't personally heard of a risk analyst making it to FO buy-side.
  3. Yes, if you're happy with the position, MO reputable bank w/ good GPA & GMAT scores & good recommendations -> Top MBA is very possible.
  4. If you're good at your job, likable, and network well, transferring to FO is very possible, personally know people who have done it.
  5. Probably more undergrad but just because more analyst positions than associates.
  6. Consulting for sure.

I will add my 2.

  1. It is competitive. They'll look for people who have a strong academic track record, solid university (many have their own targets which would be top local schools below the HYP standing), internship experience, leadership, etc. If you have a weakness in one of the aforementioned areas, beef it up.

  2. ThrowAway is pretty correct, but I think the ceiling may be a bit higher at ~$85k. I'd say average for T1 city is around $75k. Decent exit opportunities depend on what you consider decent and what the actual role is. I.E. a client service / relationship management role will provide different exit ops than risk or trade support.

  3. Is your plan to get an MBA that will allow you to move into a FO role? If so, then I'm not sure I understand what else you would do in the meantime? The work experience will help.

  4. Yes, but naturally it is difficult and also depends on what your role is. I've seen two trade support guys move to the trading desk, but the move may be more difficult if you're in a role that doesn't interface with trading on a daily basis.

  5. I don't think they generally target MBA/grad students over undergrads unless a specific skill is needed such as modeling.

  6. Consulting @ Big 4.
