reebok sports club is considered really good, but I haven't been there so I can't really say. It is on the upper west-side if I'm not mistaken? But there are many celebrities who go....should expect a heftier price.
Equinox clubs are the best in my opinion. They are all over the city and you can use any of them if you pay for the all-access membership. The initiation cost varies depending on your job, credit card membership, etc. The monthly cost is $150; it's worth it to me as the facilities are extremely clean and rarely crowded. Equinox has newer (and more) equipment than the Reebok and the Crunch fitness clubs that I've visited. My $.02.
Ya Equinox is the best gym in NYC if you don't mind the price. This is the only one I have been to in the city so I can't comment on the best at a more affordable price. Crunch maybe?
Many (including Equinox) give a discount or will wave initiation for you depending on where you work. I believe all of the BBs are covered.
I thought Equinox was mostly for broads
You say this like it's not a reason to go there.
Are you wearing a fur coat and drinking bootlegged liquor at a speakeasy?
HAHAHAAA

Maybe you've been away from the US too long fp, don't you know that "broads" is back in a big way ?

people for some reason knock on this but they are a great gym, a ton of locations in the city, all of them have pools and steam rooms and saunas, plus squash courts and you can use the golf clubs and beach clubs they have in the summer (granted they arent hamptonish but its still included in the monthly price). And the monthly price is less than the membership to one equinox
what does a membership to NY health & racket run? monthly, upfront, other. Thanks
jog to work.
Anyone do Crossfit?
can't really jog to work (would be about a 5 min jog)...Bratwurst, thanks for the info, how much do you pay for NYH&R?
There's a Gold's Gym on 54th. It's not as high class as NYH&R, but its a good gym.
how are NYU dorm gyms? i think there's a gym in Palladium...
How much is Equinox? I know everyone talks about it being "expensive", but what does that mean? $100/mo? More?
How about the other clubs mentioned (NYHR, Gold's)?
Titanboxer - Never done crossfit myself, but I am interested in it. Do you do it somewhere else?
There is a crossfit NYC club, but it looks like they are in the process of moving right now: http://www.crossfitnyc.com
crossfit is awesome ive done it at college for awhile, i'm trying to figure out if ill be able to do it in nyc, hopefully the new gym will have showers/lockeroom so i could get in on my way to work
The 63rd and Lexington Equinox was $160 a month with a corporate discount I think.
Gold's comes out to 50 a month with corporate discount when you buy at least a year and pay in full.
i don't know about specific locations but with my corporate discount, equinox is $127.50 a month taken out of my paycheck pre-tax, which if you assume a 34% tax rate, is like $84 a month out of pocket, so its still on the expensive side but not so bad.
i'm starting next week and am subsequently going to check out an equinox in midtown so i'll post about it after i see what they've got to offer

"its the running joke now, we now have fair trade with china so they send us poisoned sea food and we send them fraudulent securities."
Could you give more detail on how your membership is paid pre-tax? I understand that your getting your membership paid out of your paycheck pre-tax, but I think it's still actually included in taxable gross income. I tried searching google to find out, but all I came across was this: http://209.85.215.104/search?q=cache:27BnDsCIi7QJ:englishmajormoney.blo…
I'm unaware of any deduction for gym memberships, and I'd like to find out if there is one. Thanks
I'm unfamiliar with how deductions work on income taxes and payroll taxes. Perhaps, because the membership is paid out of your paycheck, it is exempt from payroll tax but still included for income tax purposes.
But, it might be as simple as you getting the discount for arranging auto payment. Still curious. Thanks if you do follow up. Don't worry about it though.
Here's an explanation of how it works for transportation. Many companies do this for the unlimited monthly subway cards.
http://www.mta.info/mta/pdf/tranben.pdf
I've never heard of this being done w/ gym memberships though. From my understanding, the Fed & State tax code doesn't allow and sort of employer / employee deduction for this.
I couldn't remember what section covered this for transportation, but wikipedia proved useful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_Revenue_Code_Section_132(a)
Found the answer for gym memberships though. Treasury Reg section 1.132-6(e)(2) provides examples of fringe benefits to which the de minimis rules do not apply, including membership in an athletic facility. http://www.nysscpa.org/cpajournal/2006/406/essentials/p50.htm
Taxes annoy me.
there was a lengthy discussion about this very topic of "good midtown gyms" scarcely a month ago......
http://wallstreetoasis.com/forums/good-gyms-in-midtown
Don't a lot of banks even have gyms in their buildings? Anyone know how these are?
There's a New York Sports Club on 6th and 48th.
so just to follow up, its day 2 of my employment and i found out about this gym stuff.
i was wrong, its post-tax. only benefit of a corporate membership is that the company pays the inititation fee and all that other good stuff.
otherwise it is pretty standard. i'm not sure about equinox anymore...

NYC Gyms -- Columbus Circle Area (Originally Posted: 06/05/2015)
So I'm interning around Columbus Circle this summer and I've been trying to find a gym in the area but all I can find are gyms that are out of my price range (EQUINOX) or those that aren't really gyms (NYSC) and just want to sell me 'classes.' In short, I'm looking for a place to do weight training with barbells, squat-racks, etc. What I'm not looking for is a place where 80% of the floor space is filled with treadmills and/or yoga mats.
Can't a guy find a place to actually get strong?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I go to NYSC, none of the staff ever bothered me about their classes, and I just lift.
I think they're also having a deal right now that's $20/month with no enrollment fee (usually $200). Though keep in mind they do have an annual fee of $50 that you need to pay up front and there is a $35 cancellation fee.
The NYSC by Columbus circle probably isnt $20 a month. I think thats only in select locations in NYC
consider home workouts like insanity, p90x, p90x3, etc.. saves a ton of time and depending on which program you do, you do get what you want.. not to mention you save a tom of time and money..
Which equinox gym in NYC has the hottest chicks? I've heard great things about the ones in columbus circle, soho, and west village.
^include Flatiron location too
New York Health & Racquet on 56th between 6th and 7th is functional, has a reasonable sized weights area.
Staff won't hassle you at all.
They have a reasonable range of classes if that's your sort of thing. See the website for details.
Change rooms and showers are reasonable. Has steam room and sauna in the men's section.
It's about 7-8 minutes walk from Columbus Circle, which can mean post-workout suit sweat on the walk back over summer.
Pricing should be on their website.
EDIT: http://nyhrc.com/find-club/56th-street
Sounds reasonable.
Between NYHRC and NYSC , which one is better $50 vs $85 with corporate discount month - month commitment.
Thoughts ?
there is a Reebok sports club around mid-60s street... i hear membership is expensive... > $200 per month... but maybe they have better weights or something
Better weights?? Do they weigh more? Are they coated in pink rubber?
YMCA. 64th and broadway. Largest Y in the country (according to some old dude who randomly started talking to me in the hall), tremendous weight room with open layout. 70 bucks a month no contract-- you're welcome
Best gyms to work out/ network (Originally Posted: 05/11/2011)
I will be moving to New York and I was curious are there any gyms that are good places to attend from a networking standpoint? I already want to develop my skills in tennis, racquetball and golf and I wanted to know are there some places are popular among bankers?
lol, I clicked on this thread thinking you wanted to network while lifting weights (which I was gonna advise you not to do), but racketball/tennis/golf makes sense. Don't know how to answer though cause i stick to basketball and hockey.
what's your budget? crunch and nysc are pretty cheap and have tons of locations. nysc has classes all the time which makes it easier to 1) get in the habit of regularly going to the gym and 2) network with members. if you want to throw down some more dough, consider places like equinox, reebok, and nyac.
equinox is famous for being the most expensive gym in the city but i've never been a member so i can't rate it from a networking perspective. i am a member at reebok and it definitely has a club-like atmosphere that is conducive of networking though not nearly as much as something like nyac.
if you went to a "presitigous" college/university, consider joining your school's alumni club. the harvard and yale clubs, for example, offer incredible atmospheres for fitness, leisure, and networking.
if you want golf, and variety, join chelsa piers. it's really the only option in the city. they have a huge driving range (not course) and tons of facilities however they don't have tennis or racquetball courts.
stfu freshman
bonerjamz
The Yale club if you went to Yale, Dartmouth, or UVa.
I heard Xclusive is pretty good.
Ooof, owned MoCo.
If you join a gym to network, you are a tool. I am a little more favorable to joining a social or alumni club (NYAC, Harvard/Yale, etc) for networking purposes since they're by nature about group interactions, events, alumni connections etc. One thing I've found is that once you're in the real world/not actively looking for a job, it often rubs people the wrong way if you're constantly blatantly "networking," ie trying to befriend or impress older/richer people who have something to offer you. It's better to let networks come about more organically once you're on stable footing-your connections will have more respect for you because of it.

What are you, a fucking kid?
Turtle, you're 100% right, meant NYAC not NYSC.
I got more out of joining a fishing club than a gym. As far as gyms go, every MD that I ever met who worked out regularly went to Equinox, with the exception of one.....and she went to her company's gym.
How did I get owned? I wasn't just referring to this thread specifically. It's just really annoying to hear turtles give internship advice and such....and he's only a freshman working in PWM as an unpaid intern. It's up to you guys to listen to his advice. I'm just saying I wouldn't.
A funny kid.
A hilarious kid, I might add.
If you have an alumni club I would join that.
Other gyms are just gyms, not really a networking opportunity.
NYAC definitely has networking opportunities but is also very expensive to join (and you have to be recommended by current members).
Best GYMS for NETWORKING? Are you people INSANE?
This is exactly why exclusive clubs like Harvard Club, New York Racquet Club, University Club, Union Club, New York Yach Club exist...so successful people can avoid some idiot with a s*** eating grin passing out business cards in the shower....
I mean seriously patrick just pick a gym based on what you can afford/is convenient and play sports to enjoy them/stay fit. you will meet a lot more people that way. no one likes a social climber...
Easy examples: Pres Ford joined a sports team just to get close to a law school admissions person. LBJ used to hang out in the locker room when he first moved to Washington, simply to meet everyone and make sure everyone knew who he was - the guys his age who hung out in the social clubs did not end up president....
....I'm just the messenger

Crunch 90 bucks a month? Is that really how much gym memberships are? This is the first time I'm using an independent gym.
I pay $70 or so at NYSC, but Crunch is a better gym.
GS @ 85 Broad Street
Not if you're a college junior interning in London.
Uhhh, yeah ok douch bag. I meant real gym, not running downstairs to get people coffee... although that may count as a workout for fat d-bags with bad dental hygiene.
Broad street? isn't their gym and and IB division @ maiden lane?
now an apartment building but houses a baller gym for GS bankers (but not limited to GS bankers) as well
New York Sports Club offers a universal membership that allows you to use any of of their gyms. It is worth the extra membership fee if you travel a lot for business and don't want to skip a routine or use a lesser quality hotel gym.
A lot of the membership fees are negotiable and may be discounted if you bring in new business to the gym - i.e convince a friend to sign up.
Equinox. The spin classes are entertaining.
http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/09/19/america/NA-ODD-US-Spin-Rage.p…
Thats hysterical
nysc - pay $70 a month. looked into equinox and the gym on 63/lex is incredible but $165/mo is absurd.
absurd indeed... even with corporate rates, its still around $110/mo
I also heard equinox is home to some of the hottest mlfs!
when I was a soph SA, I went to the gym at lunch once and I saw the hottest milfs. milfs come at lunch time kids.

If you can - try signing up for the NYSC student membership
Its $20 for 1 gym monthly, or $30 yearly for all gyms - You need to be under 22 I believe and have a student ID. Best thing is that it never expires 8]

Looking into NYSC, 24 hr. Fitness. I dont know of any others.
$70 a month is pretty run-of-the-mill. You can definitely spend less (I have friends at NYSC for $30 a month who managed to finagle a student rate, or you can check if Blink has a location near you), but there are many (nicer, better) places that are more expensive than $70.
Just jump in the Hudson and do some laps, or run in Central park for free.
Need to lift too, dude...
You won't find anything for $30/month.. welcome to NYC.
Best 24/7 gyms in Midtown (Originally Posted: 01/14/2012)
I want to avoid the first year analyst 15 pounds. What are some of the best 24/7 gyms around Midtown NYC?
24-Hour Fitness on 53rd and Lexington.
$79.99/month and 24/7
Pros: - Clean facilities (including lockerooms) - Lockers that lock themselves - Good cardio section with a lot of machines - Wide range of dumbbells - Proximity (a lot of banks are on Park Ave) - You'll see co-workers, friends, etc. there - Some attractive women - Saunas, steam rooms
Cons: - Limited weightlifting area - Way too crowded during peak hours (especially 5-8pm) - Limited room to maneuver in weight room
Your bank doesn't have a gym inside the building?
NYSC is decent equinox is where the fags go
1.) The one in your building. 2.) Central Park 3.) I really like the pool at Manhattan Plaza, but they're only 6-11 PM.

Anyone know of any cheap gyms in NY or those that allow you to pay each time, rather than a monthly fee? I've got a membership at my office that is pretty reasonable and is great if I have an hour or two during the day/early evening, but the hours are shit. I am not looking for anything like NYSC or Equinox, but rather, the opposite. I don't care at all who goes there, what it looks like, or any amenities it has. If its got free weights and some machines, that's perfect. Thanks in advance.
planet Fitness $1 to join and them $10 a month with no contract. Just beware you get what you pay for.
find a local BBers/PLers gym (usually fairly cheap),... somewhere you can throw some steel around with people who are strong
-Swol
Check out YMCA's.
there are no PL gyms in manhattan to my knowledge. in fact, i hear it's hard to even find a place with a power rack...
but yes, check out ymca
Join Reebok, its worth it just so you can get demoralized in a pickup game by a left handed Baron Davis
i agree, its annoying that all the manhattan gyms are overly fancy -- I just need a power rack, jump rope, place to do dips (thats it, i think?)
anyway, what neighborhood? dolphin in the east village is super cheap (i left b/c they got rid of the squat rack, but who knows they might've brought it back), cityfitness in the east village is also cheap and i pay month-to-month -- they have a power rack and a platform for deads/cleans
Also, not sure if theyre cheap, but you can use this search to find PL gyms in NY: http://www.powerliftingwatch.com/node/4420

For the young banker on the go looking to spend too much on a trendy gym.
Gym costs suck here too...I'm paying $75/month at NYSC, and that's the cheapest gym around. Equinox and the like are well over $100...
what are the name/location of some "meat market" gyms in SO CAL?
i would assume anywhere that is cheap and has group classes (yoga and crap)
unless you're looking for MILFs, then go somewhere trendy/expensive
in cali that gym is called 24 hour fitness. the girls at the ones I would go to were ridiculous. PowerMonkey is right about equinox--overpaying for something that you won't be using all that much when you start work unless its right next to your office. Some banks have gyms in the office building...
Yes on 24 Hour Fitness.
The gyms near colleges or around trendy districts are best.
My sister works out at the equinox in tribeca and spotted jessica alba. Her friend saw giselle bundchen at equinox soho. So I guess equinox would be your best bet.

Just hit the pavement homie. Go for a jog, do pull ups on scaffolding bars and do dips off your dining room chair etc.
You might still be able to join a $100 a month gym at a discounted rate through your employer and summer / new years resolution savings time etc.
