What Are You Reading? 5 Great Blogs For Finance Professionals (Originally Posted: 05/08/2014)
What do you read to keep up with financial news? The vast majority of applicants for finance jobs claim to have a ‘passion’ for finance—but this ‘passion’ can be pretty easily disproven if the applicant doesn’t keep a close eye on the markets. With so much information out there, merely reading The Wall Street Journal or the Financial Times may no longer be enough to stay well informed.
Luckily, there is a multitude of great blogs and websites to keep you up to date on developments in the world of finance. The websites below discuss topics ranging from macro-market movements and specific trading strategies to geopolitical events and economic theory. Regardless of your specific interests in the markets, here are five great blogs to get you started.
Finance Focused

Some other sites I frequent are Sober Look, Market Folly, Quartz, Re/Code, and TechCrunch
Epicureandealmaker.blogspot.com
Written by a MD
Great read. I thought I had an impressive vocabulary but I've had to break out the dictionary a few times while reading his blog. It's quite well written though I'll give him that.
While we are on the subject, Slashdot.com is the favored news source among my software dev friends.
Probably goes without saying but Seeking Alpha has to be one of the best finance related.
When I was in school our investment group / finance brethren thought seeking alpha was shit. I guess that was over two years ago, though. Seems like they've stepped up their game.
FT.com alphavile. If any of you boys read this reg.. & can speak intelligently on what they cover, I guarantee you'll get offers. Brilliant stuff
Thanks for the list, I will look into some of them. I generally read Bloomberg View, Seeking Alpha, and Epicurean Dealmaker apart from the obvious news sources like Bloomberg, WSJ, Dealbook, etc..
John Mauldin's two free subscriptions weekly, one of his own thoughts and one of some work(s) he has found thought provoking, almost always an interesting/relevant read, tries to cover everything but there might be a small bias towards issues in the US.
Pragmatic Capitalism, run by Cullen Roche, is where it's at. One of the few guys over the past half decade who has understood exactly what's going on. He's explained the realities of QE, what happened with the government debt debate (Hint: The USA doesn't run out of money), why interest rates are low and why the bond vigilantes never came to drive up interest rates despite record deficits (Think about it for a second, why does the USA need to borrow the currency its a monopoly supplier of, to spend? The answer is it doesn't!). He also explains what has been happening in Europe, why Japanese interest rates never seem to rise despite the highest debt in the world and terrible fundamentals (Hint: The monetary systems of Japan, USA, and the UK are NOT the same as that of Greece and Spain) etc etc.
Not your thing? Well, if you want nonsense and bullshit go read Zerohedge and listen to Peter Thiel.
Zerohedge is good for breaking news/info - biased as hell but it's good to balance out the overly positive news sources you get. Just don't get sucked in to the whole world will end idea.
I agree, I like to go there for some contrarian-style news. Don't bother posting there unless your portolfio composition is 50% gold bars 50% ammunition
Always thought macro-man.blogspot.com offered very good commentary/insight.
I like acrossthecurve.com
http://www.calculatedriskblog.com/
Some of my favorites (especially Long or Short Cap): http://longorshortcapital.com/ http://ultimibarbarorum.wordpress.com/ http://scottlocklin.wordpress.com/ http://brontecapital.blogspot.com/
The EDM actually has a list of blogs and further reading on his own page.
I want to know what @"BlackHat" and @"Simple As..." are reading
A favorite not mentioned is Benedict Evans blog - fantastic reading if you are tech focused
Reformed Broker will always be my favorite for being both relevant and funny
Also: House of Debt - Atif Mian and Amir Sufi put out pieces of their research from upcoming book Market Folly - good links on HF manager related topics Stratechery - Ben Thompson site - good for tech related articles
BuzzFeed
interesting list, I was not expecting blogs but I've subscribed to 3 of those to give them a try. here's my weekly reading regimen
as for ad hoc stuff that's less often:
I also occasionally read stuff from BCG, HBS, and John Mihaljevic, all good stuff.
I casually read this opinion page about world's economics, politics, science, and culture. It's called Project Syndicate: http://www.project-syndicate.org/
@TheProfessor Change WSJ for FT from that list and you have got more or less what I read.
I also read VOXEU (the best economists often write here about their current research) and Nada es Gratis, a spanish-speaking economics blog, I definitely recommend it if you speak spanish.
My friend started a finance blog to go along with the book he's writing. I think its really good.
Also damadarans blog, brontecapital, and the corner of berkshire and fairfax forum as well.
I can't post links BC I'm so new to these forums (they think its spam). PM me. Understanding what's worth reading and what isn't is absolutely what I'm good at. I know it sounds egotistic, but hey, this is finance.
Your must-read finance blogs (Originally Posted: 11/08/2011)
I know a similar thread has been done before, but I want to start a fresh thread on this.
There's tons of blogs out there, but I read the following on almost a daily basis.
Big Picture: Barry Ritholtz's blog is excellent; it provides a good synopsis of what's going in the markets, and its macro analysis is pretty solid.
Abnormal Returns: mostly just a link to a bunch of articles and blogs. It divides them by topic, and it's a very convenient way to read stuff that may interest you.
Seeking alpha: I have my issues with this site. Way too many writers, and many of the posts are superficial in its analysis. Nonetheless, I like reading it for long-short equity analysis and etf strategy.
Pragmatic capitalism: Cullen Roche is very underrated. He's an unconventional thinker who provides excellent analysis of monetary policy, china, and the sovereign debt crisis.
Felix Salmon: Huge fan. His writing covers a wide variety of finance/business topics. Salmon understands the issues quite well and manages to distill them in an accessible way.
I like zerohedge and motleyfool.
pehub too but that is not a blog.
Also finviz.com is pretty great for keeping up on the market along with google finance.
Thanks for the overview, great
Second on Zerohedge. Too much and you're going to need a prescription for anti-depressants though.
Hi guys - I found some great resources i.e. Free Tutorials on how to get a job on Wall Street at WWW insideinvestmentbanking Dot com. Best part, all the tutorials are written by bankers who’ve been there, done that, so the advice is really solid. Disclosure: I’m actually a current student of IIB and I do get help from them with recruiting (eg resume review) in exchange for letting other students know about it.
Let me know what you think about them. Cheers

Greetings all,
I'm currently looking for a new finance blog. I used to follow Rolfe Winkler daily at http://blogs.reuters.com/rolfe-winkler/ and previously at http://optionarmageddon.ml-implode.com/ for great info, articles, and analysis.
Since he stopped blogging last year to move to WSJ, I've been looking for a good replacement. Any ideas?
