Best Schools for Southern IB

I'm a senior in high school looking to go into investment banking out of Undergrad and want to go into Charlotte/Atlanta/Houston IB or even in LA/SF.... Ill just say now that my grades and SAT won't get me Ivy or Vanderbilt or Rice (2120 SAT... 4.0/4.0 weighted GPA) which schools that are too ridiculously hard to get into are good target for southern IB?

If it's a weighted gpa than its not out of 4.0, find your unweighted gpa and we can shed some more light on the matter. But in the Southeast you have Duke, UNC, Vandy, Wake Forest, and UF. Some banks in the southeast recruit out of the other big state schools like UGA and USC too. But with that sat score you can easily get into an ivy or other big target school like NYU as long as your gpa isn't too bad

I want to go to Stern but i have a 1360/1600 SAT so i wont get in with their sub 5% acceptance rate. My GPA is like a 3.6 unweighted and my school isn't one that sends many to top schools because frankly it sucks so that plays against me..... I already interviewed at Wake and am just concerned that they don't see much recruiting... Do schools like USC see recruiting from Wells Fargo etc.?

Also don't forget Emory. They're a target school for SunTrust, which I've heard pays a salary that will let you put a lot more money in the bank than your typical BB NYC salary/COL will.

If you have any interest in being a "quant", then Georgia Tech should be on your short list of schools.

Texas IB: UT, Rice, SMU, A&M. Southeast IB: Duke, UNC, Emory, Vanderbilt, Wake, UFlorida for Florida only

Idk why you included Cali cuz that's not the south but.... West: Claremont, Stanford, UCLA, Berkeley, USC

Array

Check out UNC. I know many people there who've broken in at banks in Charlotte as well as NYC. It's also less selective than Vandy or the Ivies. Oh and Chapel Hill is beautiful literally year round.

If you get into BHP at McCombs at UT, you're set. All the EB's and BB's have spots reserved for BHP students and most BHP students target MBB anyways. Also, all the BHP kids have their own finance courses which have incredibly overinflated GPA's. UT wants to make BHP look good to recruiters so almost everyone has above a 3.5. The hardest part is getting in.

Cali schools from out of state tend to be easier to get into at full-pay. I know people from my high school who went to UCB and USC who couldn't get into my state school. I would recommend UNC, Emory or WF if you like the southeast.

I wouldn't necessarily say that UT BHP admissions is same as UNC OOS USC or UCLA seeing as you need about a 1500/1600 SAT but UNC OOS is a reach but UCLA and USC are pretty good Targets and WF I'm not too worried about getting in. But I'm basically looking anywhere other then NYC because out of undergrad I wanna be able to profit as much $ as possible for grad school so I don't really want to face cost of living in NYC

So, it is a bit unclear here in some of these messages whether you all are referring to USC (So Cal) or THE REAL USC(South Carolina even though they stole our trademark so they technically are the real USC). I went to USC and did accounting. B4 is there if you want to do accounting. (we only get audit or tax though not advisory) If you actually want IB, VC, PE, then you're only shot is the international business major. Decently tough to do actually. Requires 3.5 to apply, and it is actually competitive. You will take a language every semester you're in college. Knew a girl who was fully fluent in Spanish so she had to start German. Mandatory study abroad in a country that corresponds with your language. This can actually be an advantage because, just as an example, you might get an internship with Santander in Spain if you do Spanish.

That being said you can probably do Honors college, and then IB major mixed with whatever substantive major you want (in business). Even if you don't get IB in New York, you'll probably end up as an analyst in one of the banks in Charlotte making 70+. Even failing that, you'll still come out making above 70 grand a year. And USC has a pretty great social scene. Girls are hot as fuck. Plus football games.

To round this off though, do not come here if you aren't going to achieve a 3.6 minimum (even that's probably too low if you don't do honors). Plus, you'll have to be on your extra-curricular game. Excellence is definitely expected before you get a good job out of here since we aren't all that well ranked/respected. Good luck with your choice

Yeah, except you'll be an outcast there if you're not white, upper class, republican, and preferably male.

Wait...there are people on this site that aren't the first 3 things?

Interesting current note about W&L... A W&L law professor is the lawyer for Dylann Roof (SC church shooter). He was also the lawyer for the Boston marathon bombers... I go to a similar school in the south in the same conference where there's a lot of conservative rich white people, but everyone comments on how W&L is like the epitome of the above.

no one mentioning USC on this site is talking about South Carolina dude, be serious.

While 99% of the time I'd agree, we are talking about schools in the south here. If you talk about USC in the south, they're going to think of South Carolina.

Yeah I'm talking about SoCal USC not South Carolina

But for the record I am a well off white male so the whole southern racist stereotype wouldn't effect me that much.

But that being said I'm looking to go into IB and again with a 3.6-3.7 unweighted GPA and 1360 SAT I really don't know what to expect in admissions because I have extracurriculars that are plenty and high quality but so far I'm looking at

WF UCLA USC(SoCal) UVa UNC

Yeah my chances aren't perfect like I said I'm not an Ivy candidate or Vandy but I'm hoping one of these 5 (especially uva or UNC) will take me. If I got into one of them will I have a solid chance with OCR at Charlotte/Atlanta banks? Anywhere else?

If you think you're competitive for UVA/UNC OOS you are competitive for Vandy.

the place he'd run into this most (outside TX, don't know about them) is Wake. Duke is mostly yankees and UNC is a hodgepodge. if you meant USC as in south carolina, there's 40,000 kids or something absurd like that, bound to be a few racists.

I was more commenting on the fact that he thinks racism won't effect him just because he's white. While that is true from a certain point of view, I suppose, that's certainly not the type of crowd I would want to hang with, regardless of what race I was. Whether those people exist in large numbers at any of these schools is not something I could say definitively.

On a semi-unrelated note, there's a tv show I watch called "What would you do?" where they put people in different types of situations. Every time they've done the show it's been in the New York area, until a few weeks ago when they did one on the bayou. They had a gay couple kissing and hugging at a restaurant in this episode in the Deep South......let's just say the reaction was radically different than it normally is in the tri-state area (and not in a good way). Lots of comments about the Bible says it's wrong and similar Flying Spaghetti Monster claims. However, to their credit, there were (somewhat surprisingly) a couple of frat bros who openly defended them.

Personally, I would avoid the South like the plague as they don't really have the best history with Jews down there. Maybe it's changed over the years, but I kind of doubt it.

Top 10 states for Wake's freshman class:

  1. North Carolina 2. Florida
  2. New York
  3. Maryland
  4. Virginia 6. New Jersey
  5. Pennsylvania
  6. Massachusetts
  7. Connecticut
  8. Georgia
  9. Texas 12. California

There's a pretty strong Yankee presence at Wake.

If you have bad scores but want a chance here's my two suggestions:

Texas A&M or SMU if you want Texas IB and want to work for it. Or the state you want to work in, lower schools are state dependent not regionals (sorry).

Spend one year at a local university which is cheap and easy, then transfer to the top state school you can. Ex. of this would be to go to community college or easy school, THEN transfer to the likes of an UT/Vandy.

If your scores are based on the fact you are not too smart, then choose the school which has the easiest competition to get the highest GPA. However your scores appear to be good just not great, you're fine but try to get into the BEST state school in near you. Think UT or U of Arkansas (actually I don't suggest his but someone has).

90% of it all has to do with your ability to work hard and network anyways. You could get a MS in Finance from my school (UT Dallas) and with the right amount of networking for land boutique IB work, or even MM/BB if you network hard enough.

Good luck though man.

Definitely do not go to community college. Your SAT scores and grades are perfectly workable, you're very likely to get into SMU, A&M, TCU, and could maybe stretch to Vanderbilt or WF.

I'm at Arkansas and there's only a few alumni I can find on linkedin. We've got a few at Stephens (who do a little OCR), Barclays and at BAML from what I found. I'll see how it goes, but I may transfer out. I had decent scores in highschool, but I opted for the Scholarships since my parents said they'll buy a House/Car if I go here. Doesn't seem so bad though. If you join the Leadership Walton program and get into the portfolio management clubs the placement into IB didn't seem too bad as that's what seemed to be the common denominator between those in IB. Also, it's ridiculously easy to breeze by here with a 4.0. So it's not the worst school and by no means a target, but like anywhere with some hustle I think it's definitely possible to get IB jobs out of Walton.

I'm actually from Massachusetts but don't really want to stay here.

I'm taking the SAT again and hoping to get my 640 on critical reading to a 720 to match my math score and my act from a 30 to a 33 or 34 which will help my competitiveness quite a bit. I think I have a solid shot at wake but definitely reach at UNC or Vandy. My only issue with wake is that I'm not a fan of how dominant the Greek life is and hence looking to UNC or uva.

To move to the work ethic side of things, I do work my ass off and when I get to wherever i end up I'm going to shoot for a 3.7+ so that should be beneficial. I like the idea of Charlotte or Atlanta because of the low COL and then still be networking and getting the experience to get a top MBA.
