Biking to work - Find a different place?

I hate the subway. I'm looking for a place to live, and found a great place that's about 40 mins walking from work. I don't want a 40 minute walk to and from work every day, so I'm wondering if anyone bikes to work in Manhattan? I've never really paid attention to whether people ride to the office, but I see those delivery guys all the time on their bikes. Is it feasible to ride to/from work, or do I need to suck it up and either ride the subway or find a different place?

You really, really, really don't want to bike to work. While the exercise would be great, you'd get sweaty and quickly become the guy who smelled funny -- not the best rep.

John F. Kennedy Jr. rode a bike to work. He was such a hunk. Now that was a man.

Oh he sure was...

I wouldn't recommend it. Last month I saw a tiny Mexican delivery guy get pummeled by an oncoming van and get thrown 20 feet. Luckily, I was around and my quick thinking probably saved his life...point is, don't do it.

You gave him CPR right? LOL

Sounds like he was quite the lucky tiny mexican.

Indeed. I have no doubt SeanC's IB superpowers came in handy... he used his graphing calculator to figure out his heart rate, blood pressure, future cashflows... unfortunately the guy had a shitty IRR amd so he had to let the poor guy pass.

Bike to work through central park, when you get the ice rink in winter, strap on skates to get across the little rink, then get back on your bike.

Consider it a marathon.

You can come into work a sweaty disgusting animal, that's great.

I bike to work. I wear my business clothes. Unless the weather is bad, then I wear something else.

But I live in one of the many european cities where its all geared for riding bikes and perfectly normal

depends on whether or not you care about having BO. Either way wouldn't recommend it in manhattan. It's extremely dangerous and bike messengers routinely get injured (e.g. cracked teeth, broken elbows, or even worse- a head injury) that said I knew of some crazy analyst in technology that used to do this. wore a gym shirt while riding and changed into a dress shirt in the bathroom once he got to work.
