Biology major or Economics major?
Hello
I'm currently a sophomore in college ( top 25 university), a target school to be frank, majoring in biology. I was mostly doing premed because i didn't know what else to do with my life, but now i realized i hate the field and would much rather go into finance in a healthcare related field (healthcare ER or consulting, something along those lines). My GPA so far is a 3.7 and I should graduate with a similar GPA.
My question is do you think it'd be worth it to change majors to economics. My GPA should stay the same no matter which major i choose. The problem here is I'm deciding which route to go through. In one route i get my degree with a Bio major with a chem minor and business minor (in conjunction with the business school of my university). The second route would be to get a Economics major and triple minor in biology, chemistry and business. The second route requires me to take less upper level science classes, while the first route would involve taking less classes in general (not much difference)
Also can i get some advice about which internships i should be pursuing, certifications i should be getting, or if taking any test like the GMAT is worth it?
Thanks in advance, i appreciate any response
Save GMAT for senior year if you think there's a decent chance you may want to go to business school; it would be a waste to take as a sophomore.
I view STEM majors as having credibility in recruiting as they are generally going to be viewed as quantitative / hard-working people... You'll have to navigate the "why finance" question with a higher bar since it's not your major, but if you have a good story it should be fine. This option is valid if you like the field of study but not the career.
Otherwise, I don't see why you wouldn't take the second option. Good major, good minor combos etc.
A question though: Why 1 major + 3 minors as opposed to econ + bio double-major?
it just wouldn't be logistically possible to double major. thanks for the insight
The "why finance" question will be the key determining factor once you get into interviews if you choose to major in Biology. You'll definitely get some interviews with a ~3.7+ gpa but if you can't answer that question well (and they will want a good answer) you'll be sunk.
Get relevant finance experience quickly as well - that'll help you organically piece together your story.
